Ok, so this weekend, Ill be taking a trip down to Kansas to visit Benedictine!
Im REALLY interested in this school and Im hoping it all goes ok. :)

But one problem...
I have to spend 7 hours in a car with a person I dont really get along with.
I wont go into details about the issues, but basically, they are a jerk!
So say a prayer for my sanity and self control. I dont want this trip to be too emotionally stressful...I really dont need that right now.

But anyways, if anyone knows of the school, what do you think about it?
What I have heard so far is all pretty good!

Long car rides are spent with headphones firmly attached, mp3 player full of my favorite Contemporary Christian music, and my nose in a book. You can also take a motion sickness pill, and just sleep the whole way. If you're driving, that obviously won't work. If you're driving, get a list of ten things to talk about that will bore the jerk. When I want to get some quiet time without hurting my husband's feelings, I just start talking about my next sewing project, what kind of fabric, and ask his opinion on things like zippers or buttons, and he so quickly finds someone to go hang out with or something to watch on TV. If all else fails, start saying the rosary out loud. The jerk can't interrupt that.

I graduated from Benedictine myself. I thought it was a great school. The only thing that I don't really like is that it has become SO religious that it has started to look uninviting to people without strong faith. That's probably not a problem for you though. I can pretty much tell you anything there is to know about that school and about the town that it's in. A couple of my buddies are RDs there, my cousin is the director of operations, and I've still got friends in attendance. Just ask any question you want. :)

Youre my new best friend.

Hmmm...I dont know how many questions I have right now...

How far away is the closest civilization?
Im hoping to buy most of my own food for my stay in dorms and such because I dont want to eat cafeteria food.
And Im assuming that they will provide transportation in town considering not all the students will have cars at their disposal?

Maybe Ill have more questions after I visit.

I just graduated in May, so if the rules have changed since then, I'm sorry.
The closest civilization is St. Joe MO. It's about a 20 minute drive. It's about an 80k person city and they've got bowling and putt-putt and all that. But, most people go the extra distance to KC. It's a bit less than an hour drive and they've got a great theatre.

For food - if you're entering as a freshman, you HAVE to have the 20 meal plan. Its a rule.
If you're transferring, then living on campus means you have to have SOME sort of meal plan. There's a wal-mart about 4 miles from campus, so if you have a car, it's no problem. There's also a few small grocery stores a bit closer if you have to walk, but I'll bet money you'll be able to get a ride if you want.

As for providing transportation, I don't really know what you mean by that. If you live on campus, then you're close enough to walk to your classes. There's not going to be many people living off campus next year. Right now there's 28% off campus, but they're building a new dorm for (I think) 181 students this summer. They've been trying for years to do away with off campus living, but I don't think they'll ever really catch up to the student growth rate.

edit in - and when you turn 21, you MUST go to o'malley's in Weston

go on this trip with an open mind...I mean with your traveling companion. You might find they are not so bad after all.
I just returned from Washington DC, a 6 hour trip from here, with a woman I have nothing in common with. I felt as you did, dread. We would up having alot in common. Really learned alot about each other and shared many things.
So go make the best of it, and let us know how the school is when you return

ah. I've never heard of a college doing that. like, EVER. I wouldn't worry about it though. You'll have some friends with a car, and even if you don't, there's still stuff to do on campus most weekends. Benedictine students always were good at entertaining themselves.

Justin-My husband and I both work from home, so we are probably together 95% of the time, in a one bedroom condo when it's -40C outside, sometimes, you just want some alone time. Most of the time we do enjoy each other's company very much, or we could never work under the same roof.

yay! that'd be amazing! know why? I'll probably be a freshman there next year!!! i'm excited.. i live in KC and a ton of my friends from my high school went there...i'm jealous cause i wish i was a year older so i could be with them...anyway what year will you be? the only thing i don't like is the abbey church, but St. Benedict's parish is always available for mass and perpetual adoration

the cafeteria food really isn't that bad. it used to be (so say the students) but this year they got a new food provider and it has really improved. i ate there last week, i liked it ok. tooooons better than FUS's cafeteria, anyway. better than KU's, too.

not all students will have cars, but many will. freshmen are allowed to have cars, so parking is kinda a problem but you will definitely have friends who will have cars.

KC really isn't that far. there's tons to do here... the new sprint center is getting tons of touring groups because it's so new and famous (billy joel, elton john, blue man group, toby keith, you name it). lots of concerts, shows, kc symphony, lyric opera, kc royals, kc chiefs, kc t-bones (independant league baseball team), etc....you won't be bored. i kinda wanna go away just to see and live on the east coast but benedictine is the best CAtholic school i really have a chance of paying for, so i'll probably go there...

Lol...yeah I wasnt sure if colleges did that, but I was just asking.
I may bring my own car up there...depends on what all goes down. Nothing is set yet.
But IM SO EXCITED!
I have heard alot of good things about this school.
However I only know one person who goes there...but that will force me to be nice and make new friends!

Thats really sweet! Maybe (if I do end up going there) we can be buds!
I am a sophomore right now at a community college, so who knows what I will be when I get there.
But that is also pretty general....it all depends on how many credits I have.
So TECHNICALLY, Im a sophomore.

If we both end up going there, we can hang out some weekend and you can show me the fun stuff in Kansas! That would be sweet!

What are you going to major in? I'm gonna major in Theology with a minor in Latin. I'm really excited...

Benedictine has also been inviting and receiving many extremely well known speakers lately. Dr. Scott Hahn spoke there within the last couple years, Dr. Ted Sri comes form the Augustine Institute all the time (he used to teach at Benedictine), and I don't remember when but Fr. Groeschel is coming sometime at the end of October (the last few days) or the beginning of November.
