goldenchild17
I suppose I don't have much to contribute to this thread seeing as I haven't seen Brokeback Mountain and Leprechaun 4 was just dumb and I thought both crash and million dollar baby were very good movies despite their obvious moral dilemma. And I though Pan's Labyrinth one of the best films I've ever seen. Not sure what was problematic about it, though I'm sure I may have missed something. Of that list, I would suspect I would pick Brokeback had I the guts to actually watch it. But I don't . Clauda
Pan's Labyrinth was amazing. And I still need to see Crash, but I'm almost positive I'm going to love it.

Aloysius
"Pan's Labyrinth" is probably included here because they feel it portrays Franco in too bad a light. If you listened to a lot of modern history writers, Franco's as bad as Hitler or Moussilini. I don't buy that, and neither should you. Not saying you should agree with everything he did, but I think it ought to be recognized that Franco was not as bad a guy as some make him out to be; and Pan's Labyrinth is a pretty anti-Franco piece. A good book about Franco is The Last Crusade by Warren H. Carroll. I'm surprised goldenchild did not recognize that as the reason, being such a traditionalist I would've imagined he'd be very pro-Franco. All that historical political religious context aside, I can enjoy a good escapist piece about the Spanish Civil War and still think that Franco's regime was much better than the alternative the same way I could enjoy a good escapist piece about WWII while still thinking it was necessary for the Allies to fight. But I definitely wouldn't classify it as troublesome because of that. For me personally, I'd much rather see a film about a political disagreement and see it well done, than to sit through any number of films of moral questionability. There was nothing morally wrong that I can see about this film and I've seen it like 4 times now, but maybe I missed something else? One's support of Franco doesn't really have any bearing on salvation either way as far as I can tell and I think it was at least tastefully done, especially seeing as any issues against the Church were not included in the film at all. I still don't really see it as a problematic film. It was amazing artistically and I don't think really comes close to comparing with any number of films one could harp on. LouisvilleFan
Never heard of Pan's Labyrinth or Leprachaun 4. Chose Million Dollar Baby because I bought that movie (on sale) expecting a feel-good underdog story sports flick, but ended up getting punched in the gut. Never watched it again... if I ever find myself in the mood for watching that movie, I'll just report myself to a psychiatrist to find out what's wrong with me. As for Crash, what's wrong with that one? Just cussing and violence?
