Groo the Wanderer
...and I strongly encourage YOU to research who was here before that. NOBODY was truly indigenous to North or South America. Even the Indians (feathers, not dots) migrated here...just like the Europeans. They just took a different mode of transpo... South Dakota? They have internet up there? Aloysius
the statements are no more racist than Carlos Mencia is racist. calm down. there's a girl in anthropology club that's got amerian indian ancestry. we make fun of how us good anthropologists like to crack stupid native american jokes with her. on a more serious note: the natural ethnocentric impulse doesn't go away by supressing the urge to make jokes at other cultures' expenses; it is curbed by accepting that you have it, understanding that you'll always have an ethnocentric bias on the level of emotions, and being light-hearted about it all. it's like the difference between moderation and puritanism. apply the rule of St. Benedict to all things: ne quid nimis; nothing to excess. Maggyie
Useless fact: Christopher Columbus was considered for canonization, which I think means he has the same status as Pope John Paul II, that of a "Servant of God."
Aloysius
he did do some pretty unsavorable things as governor of Hispania, but I believe he repented of all that by the time of his last voyage (where he tried to make it to Asia again, convinced theree was a sea passage through central america. he was almost the first man to the pacific ocean, there was a group of indians who told him how to walk accross to it, he opted to continue searching for a water passage though) I know there was a cause for his canonization; I'm not sure he was ever labelled "servant of God" though. the Devil's Advocate would have a lot of material to work with with his governorship of Hispania, though, so I don't think he'll ever be canonized. But I do sincerely believe, being a man of such deep devotion and prayer, that he is in heaven; just that he is to remain an unpopular saint. homeschoolmom
When I first read "considered for cannonization" I misread it as "considered for canibilization." That would have changed history quite a bit...

Indians/Southeast Asia are majority Hindu. The dots on the forehead signify many things such as marital status or religious standing. To acknowledge something that is part of a culture is not racist. As for the smilies...take it up with dUSt....they are there for us to use. Didn't realize some were verboten. Oops - there goes my racism again. I used a German word....must be anti-semitic. <----- I shall use this one to signify you, if that's ok.

Native Americans are on the whole a very peaceful people.
