Why? You had nothing to do with it. Should I also feel guilty because I'm white, even though my ancestors didn't come over until sometime in the late 19th Century and early 20th Century?

And if you're so concerned about it, why not go back to Europe? Seriously.

Ah, but you see, you were belatedly wishing us a happy holiday. I assumed that you were address others besides the South Dakotans (are there any others besides yourself?) on this board. Therefore, I would assume, since you were wishing the Americans a happy holiday, you were using the standard, legally recognized federal calendar.

Sorry to all the Canadians, Australians, Europeans and others who stumble into this thread...

Aw man! I still feel guilty because my Norman ancestors kept the Saxon man down! Also for the crimes my Aztec forerunners perpetrated on my Mayan foreunners. Heck...for that matter, I still cannot sleep at night because of the Sumerian persecution of the Phoenecians......drives me teal with guilt.....

Happy Fiji Day, everyone! I love Oct. 10th.

So what's everyone planning to do in November to celebrate National White Guilt Month?

It's not so much a matter of race as nationality. America is for Native Americans what the Hagia Sophia is for Christians. I don't know enough about Columbus to say whether we should honor him with a holiday, but there are different sides to history. European history views 1492 in terms of "discovery," but that history looks very different for the Natives (who had been here for millenia). From a Christian perspective, the discovery of the Americas brought the great good of the Gospel (which was God's providence), but that doesn't necessarily mean the discovery itself has to be celebrated, for its own sake. The history of the Native peoples after 1492 is horrific, and it was perpetrated to make way for the new arrivals and their temporal rule. I'm not saying anyone should feel personally guilty about the past, but I can understand if some people choose not to celebrate that event (and again, this is not a judgment on Columbus personally, who I don't know much about, but about the historical significance of his arrival and what came afterward).

I agree...we share a collective history with the Native populations, it's not "guilt" but awareness in the atrocities committed, in the history of our country... I just took a mid-term essay exam today on the Columbian Exchange, the point is that all the bad and all the good that occurred, shaped the US for what it is today.

The fact that Columbus' ocean-crossing adventures impacted almost the entirety human civilization might be why we celebrate Columbus Day and not "Native American Day" or some other made-up PC holiday.

What? No one celebrates Leif Erikson Day? I didn't either, but the Vikings discovered North America before Columbus!

Christopher Columbus, for whatever his flaws, brought the light of Christ and Western Civilization to a New World, and made possible the eventual founding of this great nation, and for this he should be celebrated.
I can't stand all this p.c. self-loathing revisionist carp.

I'm not going to wallow in guilt about what my white European ancestors did. One of them married a Cherokee Indian ancestor - it's not about genocide; it's about love, baby!

St. Brandon came before him

Also for those you who haven't, I would strongly encourage you all in the Americas to research the indegeous people of your particular area. I garentee you will be amazed at the story of the fore-bearers of this land.
