Halloween Costumes At Mass?

i mean, i guess im kind of torn.
on the one hand... to see and recieve the King of Kings into one's soul?!?! it seems almost sacreligious....
on the other hand... if you really think about it, it's like the little kids showing their daddy their costume... as long as it's not the grim reaper or something... but still. it could be a distraction from mass.

i dunno. if 13 year old kids show up in vampire costumes, i have to put my foot down, but if it's just little kids in princess and cowboy costumes and babies dressed like pumpkins, it's kind of cute.

So it seems that a lot of people in your grandpa's parish have asked for this.

If there was an All Saints' Evening, children were asked to dress up as Saints for that, and part of the evening was a Mass, I don't think I'd have a problem kids in costumes at said Mass. In general, though, I don't like the idea of people in costumes at Mass, and Halloween costumes tend to be less appropriate than most.

couldn't they bring their costume to change into in the social hall bathroom AFTER MASS?!?!

My kids go to a Catholic School in Dallas where they attend weekly Mass. Every year on All Saint's Day the kids get to dress up as a Saint of their own choice. There is a catch! The kids have to do research on their Saint. At the end of Mass each kid that is dressed up has to go to the front of the church and tell a little bit about the Saint that they are dressed up as. I like the idea for the kids. Not only do the kids have fun but they are learning about the Saints at the same time. As for me.......that is one day that I do not have to iron the pleats on my daughters jumper dress.

UPDATE!

They changed the bulletin and website and are now instructing people NOT to wear costumes to mass! YEAH!

Sometimes, all it takes is a little constructive feedback to help guide people's good intentions. Thanks for all that sent a friendly e-mail.

funny topic and good update/ending. Mass should always be Mass and anything else outside/before/after, imo.
