The Song of Songs (or Song of Solomon) is "a collection of love poems that is an affirmation of the goodness of human sexuality. Human love is holy because it is a gift from God. The passion and beauty of human sexual attraction is a reflection of the passion and beauty of God's love for us!" (in quotes from my Bible) This month's Catholic Digest also has a wonderful article on this book of the Bible: "The book consists of love songs sung by a man and a woman who can see only each other." "Without the Song of Songs we might conclude that we have to choose between a culture that understands only romance and a faith that leaves no room for romance. The presence of the Song of Songs in the Bible reminds us that we can have God, fidelity, all the higher expressions of love, and romance, too." "Even though God is not mentioned in the book and even though we should resist making it a strict allegory, the presence of God seems to pulse through the romantic imagery. The joyful springs of romantic love can be traced back to their source in God." "To be in love with someone is to find yourself linked to your beloved, to want good things for him or her. You can no more forget the one you love than you could forget your own name or forget that you are alive. You want to share all of yourself with the beloved. Separation is sorrow. In reunion the world seems complete." "Those caught up in such a love can catch a fleeting glimpse of the love God has for us. God loves Israel that much. God loves the Church that much. Christ loves each of us as if we were the only one. In the words of the human lover we can hear the deeper echoes of another invitation from the Song of Songs: 'Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.'
