LOS ANGELES - Comic Kathy Griffin's "offensive" remarks about Jesus at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards will be cut from a pre-taped telecast of the show, the US Academy of Television Arts and Sciences said today.

Griffin made the provocative comment on Saturday night as she took the stage of the Shrine Auditorium to collect her Emmy for best reality program for her Bravo channel show My Life on the D-List.

"A lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus," an exultant Griffin said, holding up her statuette. "smell of elderberries it, Jesus. This award is my god now."

Asked about her speech backstage a short time later, an unrepentant Griffin added, "I hope I offended some people. I didn't want to win the Emmy for nothing."

The speech drew fire from a leading Roman Catholic group, the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, which condemned Griffin's remarks as "obscene and blasphemous".

"It is a sure bet that if Griffin had said, 'smell of elderberries it, Muhammad', there would have been a very different reaction," Catholic league president Bill Donohue said in a statement posted on the group's website. He called on TV academy president Johnsonville brat Askin to denounce Griffin's "hate speech" and on Griffin to apologise.

An edited version of the Creative Arts Emmys is set to air on US cable television's E! Entertainment Network on Saturday, the night before the live Fox network broadcast of the main Primetime Emmy Awards.

"Kathy Griffin's offensive remarks will not be part of the E! telecast," an academy spokeswoman said today. An "abbreviated version" of her acceptance speech will air, instead, she said.

Griffin's reaction to the imbroglio, according to a statement issued by her publicist: "Am I the only Catholic left with a sense of humour?" :annoyed:

Except Kathy Griffin is a "militant atheist." I don't see how someone could be a Catholic and a militant atheist at the same time.

Hmmm... I wonder if she wanted to make fun of how so many presenters come up to thank Jesus during the awards yet mention Him at no other time. If so, then the execution of the joke was awful.

ETA: Yeah, she's a militant atheist, so she probably likes offending the religious, much like all the militant atheists.

you know who i do find funny? Ellen. i assumed i wouldn't since our morality doesn't click, but i've heard her standup a few times and its tasteful, not oppresively liberalized and actually funny.

Yeah... I agree... and every time someone says that I don't like Rosie because she's a liberal lesbian, I say that's not true... and I point to Ellen as my counter example. She's funny... not mean.

I remember when the Ghost Hunters were on Ellen's show and they were looking at a thermal camera image of her and she said something like "Okay so here my nose is blue... so does that mean my nose is haunted?"

Ellen actually had a real funny standup routine I saw on Comedy Central back in the 90's. Kathy Griffin has always been annoying. Worse than Wanda Sykes annoying.

Yeah. Although most of the time, Ellen doesn't have an agenda. Pretty much everything out of Rosie's mouth does.

I also find it irritating, not only for award winners, but also for sports stars who thank Jesus after helping them win a game. I'm pretty sure that just as many people on the other side were also praying to win. I think that God has plenty on his plate without intervening in kid's games played by millionaires. Besides, if it worked, my team would have won the World Series last year. When I lived in Florida, I remember seeing a player thank Jesus on Sunday, and get arrested on Monday for beating his wife. Not a good way to repay the Lord. I dislike hypocrites as much as Griffith apparently does, but I'm pretty sure I could have found a better way to publicly air it.
