socalscout
I chose behind the screen even though I usually go face to face. This is because I don't go face to face by choice but because that's how they do it where I go to confession. I prefer behind the screen and not because I am a "big chicken"!!! But because I find that confession tends to be more reverent that way and I can look at a crucifix and be totally focused on Christ and receiving His love rather than on kicking back with a priest and shooting the breeze. That's been my experience of face to face confession, it's less solemn and often less serious. The priest feels obligated to entertain or something. Anyway, that's my take. Yeah...you're a big chicken. Just Kidding. I prefer face to face. When I was young, I would be behind the screen and hear this disembodied voice booming down on me talking to me about my sins and giving me penance. For me it was a fearful, anxiety filled experience even though the priests were all pretty nice guys. Don’t get me wrong we all should be a little fearful and anxious about our sins when we enter the confessional but not to the point of distraction. I’ve never had a priest entertain me but I have seen a glimpse of God’s forgiveness in his eyes as he sees the pain in mine. Just my opinion. BLAZEr
I go behind the screen usually because it feels more like God is speaking throught the words of the priest. I agree here, and actually, I resent the notion that "face to face" somehow makes you more courageous or is a "better" way to confess. I used to hang out with a priest friend of mine and we would play cards, or watch a movie, or chess, or something . . . and every night before I left I would go to confession with him. And every time I would kneel down behind him and go to confession in a way that wasn't "Face to face" . . . He thought this was hilarious, so he asked me "Why do you do it, you know I know who you are." And I said "Father, i don't do it becasue I want to be anonymous, I do it becasue when I look at your face I see you, and I see all your faults . . . and when I want Christ to counsel me through you, sometimes this gets in the way . . . but when I don't see your face I am more resolved to know that this is Christ counesling me, not you." He said "Cool. I was just wondering." So anyway . . . that's why i go behind the screen. Not because I'm a chicken.
IcePrincessKRS
When I first started going to Confession as a wee 7 year old I always went face to face. Then we had this one priest who didn't like face to face confessions so he always would put stuff on the seat so you couldn't sit there and I got used to behind the screen. Now I'm a big ol' chicken and won't go face to face unless I have to.
Im4Him
I chose #3. Sometimes I go face-to-face, and sometimes I go behind the screen. When I went today, it was behind a screen, because that was how the confessionals are. I don't really think I have a preference.
Norseman82
Bawk! Bawk bawk bawk! Behind the screen. That's how I was raised, that's how I continue to do it. I've never done face-to-face. E pluribus cluck-cluck!!
Carrie
I go behind the screen always. I used to go face to face in school, but it made me feel uncomfortable.
Birgitta Noel
I almost always go face to face now, but that's becuase I know my confessor very well. If I were to go behind the screen he'd know who I was anyways. Before when I was younger I used to go behind the screen though because I was so ashamed and embarassed. One thing that I always tell my CCD kids is this....Going behind the screen is ok as is face to face, your call...BUT, if you are going behind the screen because of your pride (ie because you don't want Fr. to think you're a bad person etc) then you need to really examine why you are doing it and if you should be more humble. Obviously it's an individual choice. One way that I've found that face to face can be more reverent and that helps me to focus is to kneel in front of Fr. This is a good reminder of why you are there and it keeps everyone on track! And as a bonus if you have bad knees you can offer it up

marielapin
Since I tend to start crying everytime I go to confession, its easier for me to go behind the screen. If I had to look the priest in the face I don't know if I would be able to make it through without bursting into full out uncontrollable tears. I never take a list in and so this way it is easier for me to concentrate on my sins instead of the priest and what he is doing, or getting embarrased cause I'm going to cry. cimlog
I feel more comfortable behind the curtain but feel better after I go face to face. I guess it all depends for me.
