kafka
Sorry, don't quite understand what you mean by being "disappointed in Dan's decision to see it through, where bad consequences clearly outweigh the good". If you mean the choice to escort Ben to Yuma prison, that is a good choice.
the choice was initially good and remained good throughout the movie. But at the end the new choice he made was not a good choice in my mind. The foreseen bad consequences of so many people dying including himself didnt outweigh the good consequence of getting Ben in the train, the odds of which were very low, since most the town was lined up against him and in fact he would have never got Ben to the train if Ben hadnt helped him. So it was a foolhardy choice, and out of character for him. He was doing it for the sake of being a hero to his boy which is a romantic notion. So it was farfetched and romantic. But it is fiction so it worked. He could have chose to surrender and I think Ben would have held his word to let him go free, and he would have still been payed by the trainman. But then we wouldnt have a dramatic ending would we? Edited December 19, 2010 by kafka
sarcasmguy126
If you own it (as I do) or have at least rented it from a video store, you can easily watch the final scene with audio commentary by director James Mangold and whoever else there is to comment on it. Mangold says that he did not at all like the ending of the original 1957 movie, so he thought it was better to have it end like the '07 one did, with
Byron shooting Dan, and then Ben shooting the rest of his posse dead, then whistling for his horse, so that he could escape.
So I agree with you because it is indeed theatrical for Mangold to do it that way, but I felt that it more or less leaves the viewer rooting for the bad guy....doesn't it seem like that? MithLuin
I got to see this movie because my sister gave her copy of it to my parents. She gave it away because she watched it while going into labour with her first child and never wants to see it again .

Pontifite 7 of 10
I didn't expect to see Luke Wilson!
"you want him bad enough to die?" smiles ugly teeth. :D I first watched this movie in, like the 9th grade. I had no idea what I was in for, I just thoguht it looked kinda cool. Now I don't like Westerns all that much, but this moive grabbed you sucked you in and made you forget thats it was a western. I have to say its in my top three favotite movies. !) Muppet Trwesure island 2) Night at teh Museum 2 3) 3:10 to Yuma. Its likea little slasher film, almost. Knocking people off and such. And the plot is just so intriging. I have thought out many squals and spin offs to this movie, and i could make a pretty good franchise out of it, i think. Russel Crowe is amesome, in general, but shined in this movie, "They're gonna hang me, hang me in the mornin'" Did i mention I'm naming one of my kids Daniel Even? Or Benjamin Wade? I have so much to say about this movie....but i think its clear what I mean. Its the most bomb digity movie ever.
