can someone tell me the purpose of facebook? I don't have one, and I wouldn't really wanna have one if I have to deal with all the lame childish stuff that can go on with those sites (which is why I don't have a personal myspace page) Is facebook just another method of communication? I understood it's origin, like back when it started it was for college students to still keep in contact with each other, but now, I'm wonderin if it's just another hassle.

let me know what you all think of it, the positives and negatives...
It has better security features in my opinion, people can't see anything in your profile (except for your default image) until you add them as friends. Only down side, it uses your IRL name as your display name. It's more mature, and you don't have to worry about spam bots.

No, they don't even show your profile pic if you don't want them to. You just show up as a question mark.

Stuff Paladin said. Also, since FB uses real names, it's easier to find people, you don't have to remember screen names. Most people have just one FB account, under their name, so you don't have to worry about juggling different accounts. People use them to invite people to events. Most forms of communication are limited to coming from only people you have indicated you are "friends" with.

As a college student, I find being on FB is almost necessary. It is not just "a" social networking tool, it is "the" social networking tool of college students, at least at my college. I heard a professor complain that he only just finally got the hang of email and now his students hardly ever use it, they send IMs and messages on FB.

It keeps me in the loop about events, parties, club and ministry news (from the FB "groups"), it lets me know news about friends I don't talk to often (they have a new gf, they went on vacation, their birthday is tomorrow). Most of my friends put all their pictures on FB (limited to viewing by their friends) and tag them with names of FB members in them, so I get to see hundreds of pics of friends. There are probably other benefits I'm not thinking of.

Didn't know that, thanks for the clarification. :)

I was going to add you Red but FB is down for maintenance. I'll try later. This is what I get for being 13 hours ahead. :P
