kateri05
you aren't seriously suggesting that prior to the ordinary form of the mass, women weren't ALLOWED to wear pants, as in dress slacks, to Mass?
That's correct.

can you please give evidence for this? not that women did wear skirts, but that they were not canonically permitted to wear pants to Church. brendan1104
The 1917 Code and other disciplinary/liturgical documents didn't even need to publish this restriction, probably because the feminist revolution hadn't even started so women would never have even dreamed of wearing pants to church. It wouldn't be fashionable or modest. Ask your grandmother or someone else who grew up before the changes if they would ever have worn pants. Dave
I attend an FSSP-staffed parish, and women aren't forbidden from wearing pants there -- just so long as they're not tight. The only things that are forbidden are immodest garments -- low-cut tops and dresses, short skirts, tight and/or revealing clothing, slit skirts with the slit going up really high, sundresses. Also, shorts and t-shirts aren't allowed. Men aren't required to wear coats, ties, suits, etc. at my parish, nor are jeans forbidden. And women are encouraged, but not required, to wear head coverings.

brendan1104
That's the custom and what's asked of at several FSSP locations including those closest to me. Maybe it differs from place to place? Plus, Dave's in the south and it's a lot warmer there. kateri05
see thats what i meant. there is a difference between custom and canonically requiring skirts. i'm sure FSSP masses are just concerned about modesty, which does include dress slacks.
sundresses
also, when did sundresses become immodest? Edited August 9, 2007 by kateri05
Maggyie
A lot of sundresses nowadays have zero sleeves and almost zero neckline... I know because sundresses are usually my favorite thing to wear in the summer, but I can't buy half the stuff at Ann Taylor Loft :tears: Wearing a shrug helps with the no sleeves, but basically some of them you would have to wear a sweater over to wear them to ANY Mass, let alone an Extraordinary Form Mass. Frisbee, let us know how things go this Sunday!
kateri05
yes, frisbee, let us know!! and if you think of it, take pictures of the Church after Mass! ps. since when is no sleeves immodest? my wedding dress was without a sleeve and perfectly appropriate

But read War and Peace and note how Tolstoy describes Helen's bare shoulders through Pierre's eyes, and you'll see how men sometimes look at it...
