Frisbee
Hello - I am a small group leader in my parish and we have been lurking around phatmass for sometime now. It is such a wonderful community. We are going to attend a Tridentine Mass this Sunday celebrated by an FSSP priest. I am 30 y/o and the guys in my group range from 14-18, so needless to say we are all post Vat. II kids. What are the protocols in a Latin Mass? Are there usually missals available for us to use with the prayers, translations, movements, etc? We are very excited to attend this mass but want to make sure that we are knowledgable and respectful. Any help would be appreciated. Peace, Frisbee
Resurrexi
The church will probably have little red missals which have the ordinary prayers (the prayers that are the same every Sunday) of the Mass in Latin on one side and English on the other, and they may also have the proper prayers (the prayers which change every Sunday) printed in the bulletin or on another piece of paper. I hope you and your youth group has a great experience!
brendan1104
Make sure they're dressed appropriately. FSSP standards: Men/boys: Button-down shirt and dress pants, tie and jacket preferable. Women/girls: Dresses/Skirts, no revealing cuts/slits in shirts or skirts, head covering. If they are going to Communion, then it must be done kneeling at the rail and on the tongue ONLY.

A good suggestion that was given to me for my first Tridentine Mass was not to get too caught up in the Missal. Yes, you can get one when you come in and follow along, but make sure to absorb the sights, smells, and especially sounds that are generally so much richer in a Latin Mass- don't just stand/sit/kneel there with your face in a book. Also, my first time I didn't completely fall in love with the Mass- sometimes it takes a second or third time or more, so if they/you don't like it at first, don't completely give up on the idea. God bless! p.s. I got excited at first when I saw your signature because I thought I might know you, but the Frisbee I'm thinking of would only be 20 years old. oh well. kateri05
Women/girls: Dresses/Skirts, no revealing cuts/slits in shirts or skirts, head covering.
you aren't seriously suggesting that prior to the ordinary form of the mass, women weren't ALLOWED to wear pants, as in dress slacks, to Mass?
-and they don't say "Amen" verbally- just recieve the Body of Christ.
how come?
The 1962 Missal simply has the priest praying the prayer "Corpus Domini nostri Jesu Christi custodiat animam tuam in vitam æternam. Amen." which is "The Body of our Lord Jesus Christ keep thy soul unto eternal life. Amen." and has the communicant saying nothing.

Frisbee
My wife will be going to the Mass with us, and possibly some of the young ladies from her small group. What type of headcover must they wear and where would we find it? I will tell my guys to wear slacks and ties, not sure they all have jackets, but I will certainly encourage them to wear one. The girls then should dress modestly, dresses - not slacks, and a headcovering (we have to work on that one). *Just going through a mental checklist - feel free to add to it* I feel like we will be "fish out of water". If we just follow the congregation and the missal, should we catch on to what is happening? One more question - Will this be the Mass that will be more widely available after Sept. 14? Thanks so much for all of your help. I am looking forward to more replies! Frisbee

You can find headcoverings (sometimes called mantillas or chapel veils) at online sites like HaloWorks and and Aquinas and More... If you can't wait for shipping etc since it IS this Sunday, you can always just have the ladies wear hats!
Maggyie
PS: Is the Mass you are going to billed as a High Mass or a Low Mass? Low Masses can be very confusing for the neophyte, High Masses are more understandable. Don't be too nervous about doing the "wrong thing," I am sure nobody would bite your heads off Just don't sit near the front, and then you can watch what the other congregants do... in my experience, the Extraordinary Form is more "exercise," with a lot more standing, kneeling, sitting, rinsing and repeating! brendan1104
If they have a jacket or zip up hoodie, they can use the hood for that. Or a hat. Or a veil. At most FSSP locations, extra head coverings are available. Ask the priest/sacristan if you don't see any in the vestibule.
Frisbee
Thanks for all of the advice. We have a Catholic store in town and my wife has already scoped out some head coverings for her and the girls. I am not sure if it is a low or high mass. It is the Sunday - 9:30 mass. We will sit in the middle so we can follow the flow. Someone mentioned earlier about receiving the Eucharist - since it is received at the rail, is there a line to get to the rail like at a Novus Ordo Mass? Oh, and we just receive - don't say amen, and from the priest on the tongue, right? Thanks so much.
brendan1104
Yes there is a line just like at the Novus Ordo.
