How Good Is At&t As A Wireless Carrier

I am curious. I am sure you can know why I am curious, and it has to do with a bday gift and my mom chipping in.

So, is it really that bad?

I do (was Cingular, now AT&T)

I got it in Indiana and did not have trouble. The problems I did have were resolved over the phone without much hassle. Since moving it's been so-so. Reception in my house generally smells of elderberries, esp. in the basement but really wherever I am. The rollover minutes are nice. Elsewhere it is not so bad, so it could be that I just live in an area where coverage is not as good.

I have had a HUGE problem with dropped calls in the past couple of months, ever since the switch became official. I don't know why but it has been a big problem. Probably 1/3 of my calls are dropped at some point, at times due to my being on the road (understandable) and sometimes for no apparent reason (frustrating). I find it ironic, given the commercials touting "fewest dropped calls."

I have it on my Blackberry. Hate it. A few dropped calls every month - not a big deal. The problem in the DFW area is loss of signal. I lose 'bars' for no reason.

In my house I get 3 bars in my office, 5 in my garage, and 1 in my bedroom. I lose signal completely at Kroger and at one of the Kohl's. Going under bridges I drop to 1-2 bars. There are a few other dead spots here and there. For the life of me I cannot understand why in such a large metro area, I get dead spots!

Also, my calls fail to connect every once in a while...the phone just sits there doing nothing till I redial.

Oddly enough, any emails from work seem to come through without a problem, even when my calls won;t go through.

On a personal note - their network techs are some of my customers. A bunch of uncouth, inane, bickering, self-centered tards. <------ and yes, I WAS being charitable...

In that case, I hope the switch is worth it.

I'll definitely be shopping for a new carrier come May.

Well, I checked a coverage map, and they seem to have enough coverage where I am

Yeah ... I'm in a dark orange area too.

I dunno what the problem is, but the coverage is not good ... far too irregular considering the area I'm living in. I'd say give it a go; the phone is awesome and the coverage while spotty is workable.

Besides, I really need an organizer that works with a Mac and the iTunes and other features aren't bad either :)

It's my cellphone too. Only carry it cause my job makes me. Once I change jobs, I'll prolly go to a normal phone...not quite the electronic leash that way :-)

:D: sounds like you've made up your mind :hehehe:

You'll have to let me know how you like it ... seriously iphone is the only thing that might convince me to stay with AT&T. Or if, after I move, coverage is better.

I just wish I did not talk to my priest friend who highly recommended it and told me I really need to get one, saying how much he really loved it. Then reading this review today http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/03/iphone-review/ definitely did not help.

I would have already had one if they used a different provider, it is just At&t that I am hesitant about. The way I look at it though, not a whole lot of people call me (since I keep that number private) and when I get calls I don't spend a lot of time on the phone. So, to have the extra features of an organizer, an iPod and fully functional web browser are appealing, as is the ease of use and the great visibility to be able to see everything I am working with on my phone.

Oh, and how could I forget the most important feature: maps...my sense of direction is terrible, so any help is always much appreciated

I am going to look at them tomorrow night and make my decision then.
