Democrats Block Amendment To Prevent Fairness Doctrine
Senate Democrats on Friday blocked an amendment that would have prevented the return of the Fairness Doctrine, a federal rule requiring broadcasters to air opposing views on issues.

Although no legislation has been offered to bring back the regulation, which was scrapped in 1987, South Dakota Sen. John Thune, Minnesota Sen. Norm Coleman and other Republicans have been mounting a pre-emptive attack in recent weeks. They argue that a return to the old rule would give the government too much power in regulating content. The House recently passed an amendment banning the rule's return.

When Coleman, R-Minn., tried to bring up his amendment Friday to a defense authorization bill, Sen. Carl Levin, a Michigan Democrat who chairs the Armed Services Committee, objected. Levin's office said he objected because the amendment belonged in the Commerce Committee's jurisdiction, and because it would have taken up time while the Senate was trying to debate Iraq.

The subtext of the debate over the Fairness Doctrine is talk radio's perceived dominance by conservative voices.
I think I posted this before but here it is again: a little piece I wrote a couple of weeks ago:

On Fox News Sunday (5/24/07), Senator Diane Feinstein
(Democrat--California) said she is going to look at the possibility of reviving the "Fairness doctrine", and unconstitutional doctrine practiced by the FCC that limited free speech in the media and was finally struck down by the FCC in the 80s. In essence, the doctrine required licensed broadcasters (there goes more government regulation) to give both points of view to any political story, controversial story etc. Basically it restricted the first amendment right to freedom of speech.

Now we have Feinstein calling for nothing less than the censorship of conservative talk radio. She wants to (or as she puts it, is "looking into") shred the Constitution. And Feinstein is not the only one; the left wing "Center For American Progress" are also up in arms over talk radio, as is Senator Trent Lott (Republican-- Mississippi). The Why is this? The reason is two-fold:

1. The liberals are very jealous of the tremendous success of Conservative talk radio. This jealousy is exponentially increased when coupled with the fact that the left has failed to produce successful talk radio. "Air America" is a total flop.

2. More importantly, the liberals as well as any politician down in Washington, regardless of party lines, who is behind this "comprehensive Immigration reform act", are nothing short of pissed because the talk radio hosts have mobilized many in this country against this bipartisan joke of an immigration reform. Senators' phones are ringing off their hooks and there are reports of lawmakers unplugging their phones and faxes. So this leads people like Trent Lott to say things like "Talk Radio is ruining America. We have to deal with that problem." WRONG Senator, illegal immigration is ruining America. You many other politicians down in Washington are ruining America by wasting your time on a joke of a reform bill which grants nothing but amnesty to those who have broken the law (about 12 million). And we, the American people, will have to deal with that problem: at the expense of our wallet, our safety (both local and national), our culture, our identity....... the list goes on and on.

The thing is, we would never hear Senator Feinstein say that the tv or newspaper media is completely biased to the left, much less suggest that the government regulate it to make it more conservative. In fact, talk radio is one of the few media forces that attempts to balance out the leftist bias that is shoved down our throat by the major networks and newspapers. This is just another classic example of liberal hypocrisy.

The classic indication of a dictatorship: censor your opponents.

Lets shred the constitution to shut up the talk radio hosts who REALLY know what this bill is all about, and while we're doing that lets call the American people stupid because they don't know squat about this bill and they won't because we won't tell them. Talk radio is empowering the people to fight this immigration bill that, if they don't, will come back and bite them. The supporters of the bill want to silence that opposition. What better way to do that than to enact governmental restrictions on free speech.

The liberals claim they stand for free speech, freedom of ideas, diversity, tolerance, ad nauseam. Wake up call: THEY DONT. THEY HATE THE CONSTITUTION. In fact, they care about the aforementioned ideals just about as much as they care about the poor and the "little guy."

Call your senators. Tell them no amnesty. And listen to some talk radio, because if Diane Feinstein has her way (which hopefully she won't), a great American tradition and medium may be wiped out (heck maybe next they'll go after facebook notes).

Well, it's only kind of because I find it so hard to believe that I just sort of block it. What is going through the heads of the people promoting this sort of insanity?
