Ragamuffin
I enjoy evangelical "praise and worship" music, but so much of it is lightweight and syrupy, "Jesus is my boyfriend" kind of schlock. I've started rediscovering hymns both old and new. So I thought I'd start a thread on your favorite ones, particularly from a lyrical depth standpoint. My first entry is "How Deep The Father's Love For Us" by Stuart Townend. It's a relatively new hymn, having only been written about 12 years ago. But if you've heard it, you'd swear it had been around for centuries. Beautiful melody too, but the lyrics are what grab me:
How Deep The Father's Love For Us How deep the Father's love for us, How vast beyond all measure That He should give His only Son To make a wretch His treasure How great the pain of searing loss, The Father turns His face away As wounds which mar the chosen One, Bring many sons to glory Behold the Man upon a cross, My sin upon His shoulders Ashamed I hear my mocking voice, Call out among the scoffers It was my sin that held Him there Until it was accomplished His dying breath has brought me life I know that it is finished I will not boast in anything No gifts, no power, no wisdom But I will boast in Jesus Christ His death and resurrection Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer But this I know with all my heart His wounds have paid my ransom
IrishSalesian
I like the Te Deum... Fiat misericórdia tua, Dómine, super nos, quemádmodum sperávimus in te. In te, Dómine, sperávi: non confúndar in ætérnum. ~~In English We praise Thee, O God; We acknowledge Thee to be the Lord. All the earth doth worship Thee, The Father everlasting. To Thee all Angels cry aloud, The heavens and all the powers therein. To Thee Cherubim and Seraphim Proclaim with unceasing voice: "Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts! Heaven and earth are full of the majesty of Thy glory." The glorious chorus of Apostles, The admirable company of Prophets, The army of Martyrs clothed in white, The holy Church throughout all the world, Doth acknowledge Thee, The Father of infinite majesty, Thine honourable, true, and only Son, And also the Holy Ghost, the Comforter. Thou art the King of glory, O Christ. Thou art the everlasting Son of the Father. Thou, in undertaking the freeing of man, Didst not abhor the Virgin's womb. Thou, having overcome the sting of death, Didst open to believers the kingdom of heaven. Thou sittest at the right hand of God In the glory of the God the Father. We believe that Thou shalt come to be our Judge. We beseech Thee, therefore, to help Thy servants, Whom Thou hast redeemed with Thy precious blood. Make them to be numbered with Thy Saints In eternal glory. O Lord, save Thy people, and bless Thine inheritance. Rule over them, and lift them up for ever. Day by day we bless Thee And we worship Thy Name On earth and in heaven. Find it fitting, O Lord, to guard us without sin on that day. O Lord, have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us. O Lord, let Thy mercy be upon us Who have hoped in thee. O Lord, in Thee have I hoped; May I never be confounded.
Ragamuffin
Crown Him With Many Crowns Crown him with many crowns, the Lamb upon his throne. Hark! How the heavenly anthem drowns all music but its own. Awake, my soul, and sing of him who died for thee, and hail him as thy matchless King through all eternity. Crown him the virgin's Son, the God incarnate born, whose arm those crimson trophies won which now His brow adorn; fruit of the mystic rose, as of that rose the stem; the root whence mercy ever flows, the Babe of Bethlehem. Crown him the Son of God, before the worlds began, and ye who tread where he hath trod, crown him the Son of Man; who every grief hath known that wrings the human breast, and takes and bears them for His own, that all in him may rest. Crown him the Lord of life, who triumphed over the grave, and rose victorious in the strife for those he came to save. His glories now we sing, who died, and rose on high, who died eternal life to bring, and lives that death may die. Crown him the Lord of peace, whose power a scepter sways from pole to pole, that wars may cease, and all be prayer and praise. his reign shall know no end, and round his piercèd feet fair flowers of paradise extend their fragrance ever sweet. Crown him the Lord of love, behold his hands and side, those wounds, yet visible above, in beauty glorified. No angel in the sky can fully bear that sight, but downward bends his burning eye at mysteries so bright. Crown him the Lord of Heaven, enthroned in worlds above, crown him the King to whom is given the wondrous name of Love. Crown him with many crowns, as thrones before him fall; Crown him, ye kings, with many crowns, for he is King of all. Crown him the Lord of lords, who over all doth reign, who once on earth, the incarnate Word, for ransomed sinners slain, now lives in realms of light, where saints with angels sing their songs before him day and night, their God, Redeemer, King. iggyjoan
I don't remember what it's called.. Cantical of the Sun, maybe? Yeah. I love that song. Canticle of the Sun Refrain: The heavens are telling the glory of God, and all creation is shouting for joy. Come dance in the forest, come, play in the field, and sing, sing to the glory of the Lord. Praise for the sun, the bringer of day, he carries the light of the Lord in his rays; the moon and the stars who light up the way unto your throne. (Refrain) Praise for the wind that blows through the trees, the seas mighty storms, the gentlest breeze; they blow where they will, they blow where they please to please the Lord. (Refrain) Praise for the rain that waters our fields, and blesses our crops so all the earth yields; from death unto life her mystery revealed springs forth in joy. (Refrain) Praise for the fire who gives us his light, the warmth of the sun to brighten our night; he dances with joy, his spirit so bright, he sings of you. (Refrain) Praise for the earth who makes life to grow, the creatures you made to let your life show; the flowers and trees that help us to know the heart of love. (Refrain) Praise for our death that makes our life real, the knowledge of loss that helps us to feel; the gift of your self, you presence revealed to bring us home. (Refrain)

Didymus
Let all Mortal Flesh Keep Silence Let all mortal flesh keep silence, and with fear and trembling stand; ponder nothing earthly minded, for with blessing in his hand Christ our God to earth descendeth, our full homage to demand. King of kings, yet born of Mary, as of old on earth he stood, Lord of lords in human vesture, in the Body and the Blood he will give to all the faithful his own self for heavenly food. Rank on rank the host of heaven spreads its vanguard on the way, as the Light of Light descendeth from the realms of endless day, that the powers of hell may vanish as the darkness clears away. At his feet the six-winged seraph; cherubim with sleepless eye, veil their faces to the Presence, as with ceaseless voice they cry, "Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, Lord Most High!" tojo
One of my favorite hymns is "Immortal Invisble"
Immortal, invisible, God only wise, In light inaccessible hid from our eyes, Most blessèd, most glorious, the Ancient of Days, Almighty, victorious, Thy great Name we praise. Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light, Nor wanting, nor wasting, Thou rulest in might; Thy justice, like mountains, high soaring above Thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love. To all, life Thou givest, to both great and small; In all life Thou livest, the true life of all; We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree, And wither and perish—but naught changeth Thee. Great Father of glory, pure Father of light, Thine angels adore Thee, all veiling their sight; But of all Thy rich graces this grace, Lord, impart Take the veil from our faces, the vile from our heart. All laud we would render; O help us to see ’Tis only the splendor of light hideth Thee, And so let Thy glory, Almighty, impart, Through Christ in His story, Thy Christ to the heart.
See/hear the music played with church bells on Youtube. stlmom
BE THOU MY VISION-- Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart; Nought be all else to me save that Thou art- Thou my best thought by day or by night, Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light. Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word; I ever with Thee, and Thou with me, Lord; Thou my true Father, I thy true son. Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one. Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise; Thou my inheritance now and always. Thou and Thou only, first in my heart; High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art. High King of heaven, my victory won, May I reach heaven's joys, O bright heaven's Sun! Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all. Groo the Wanderer
Here I am Lord Words and Music by Daniel L Schutte © 1981 Genesis 46:2 "And God spake unto Israel in the visions of the night, and said, Jacob, Jacob. And he said, Here am I." I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard my people cry. All who dwell in dark and sin, My hand will save. Chorus Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart. I, who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright. Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send? Chorus Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart. I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne my people’s pain. I have wept for love of them. They turn away. Chorus Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart. I will break their hearts of stone, Give them hearts for love alone. I will speak my words to them. Whom shall I send? Chorus Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart. I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will send the poor and lame. I will set a feast for them. My hand will save. Chorus Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart. Finest bread I will provide, 'Til their hearts be satisfied. I will give my life to them. Whom shall I send? Chorus Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart. Groo the Wanderer
also.... Lord of the Dance Words by Sydney Carter Music I danced in the morning when the world was begun I danced in the Moon & the Stars & the Sun I came down from Heaven & I danced on Earth At Bethlehem I had my birth: Dance then, wherever you may be I am the Lord of the Dance, said He! And I'll lead you all, wherever you may be And I'll lead you all in the Dance, said He! (...lead you all in the Dance, said He!) I danced for the scribe & the pharisee But they would not dance & they wouldn't follow me I danced for fishermen, for James & John They came with me & the Dance went on: Dance then, wherever you may be I am the Lord of the Dance, said He! And I'll lead you all, wherever you may be And I'll lead you all in the Dance, said He! (...lead you all in the Dance, said He!) I danced on the Sabbath & I cured the lame The holy people said it was a shame! They whipped & they stripped & they hung me high And they left me there on a cross to die! Dance then, wherever you may be I am the Lord of the Dance, said He! And I'll lead you all, wherever you may be And I'll lead you all in the Dance, said He! (...lead you all in the Dance, said He!) I danced on a Friday when the sky turned black It's hard to dance with the devil on your back They buried my body & they thought I'd gone But I am the Dance & I still go on! Dance then, wherever you may be I am the Lord of the Dance, said He! And I'll lead you all, wherever you may be And I'll lead you all in the Dance, said He! (...lead you all in the Dance, said He!) They cut me down and I leapt up high I am the Life that'll never, never die! I'll live in you if you'll live in Me - I am the Lord of the Dance, said He! Dance then, wherever you may be I am the Lord of the Dance, said He! And I'll lead you all, wherever you may be And I'll lead you all in the Dance, said He! Starets
Simple Gifts: (Shaker hymn whose lyrics are used for Lord of the Dance) 'Tis a gift to be simple 'Tis a gift to be free 'Tis a gift to come down Where we ought to be And when we find ourselves In that place just right We will be in the valley Of Love and delight. When the true simplicity Is gained To bow and to bend We shall not be ashamed To turn and to turn it will Be our delight 'Till by turning and turning we Come 'round right. Guest meinradkid
I'd like to offer two old hymns: Nearer My God to Thee and Abide with me Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee! E’en though it be a cross that raiseth me, Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee. Refrain Nearer, my God, to Thee, Nearer to Thee! Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down, Darkness be over me, my rest a stone. Yet in my dreams I’d be nearer, my God to Thee. Refrain There let the way appear, steps unto Heav’n; All that Thou sendest me, in mercy given; Angels to beckon me nearer, my God, to Thee. Refrain Then, with my waking thoughts bright with Thy praise, Out of my stony griefs Bethel I’ll raise; So by my woes to be nearer, my God, to Thee. Refrain Or, if on joyful wing cleaving the sky, Sun, moon, and stars forgot, upward I’ll fly, Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee. Refrain There in my Father’s home, safe and at rest, There in my Savior’s love, perfectly blest; Age after age to be, nearer my God to Thee. Refrain Abide With Me Abide with me; fast falls the eventide; The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide. When other helpers fail and comforts flee, Help of the helpless, O abide with me. Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day; Earth’s joys grow dim; its glories pass away; Change and decay in all around I see; O Thou who changest not, abide with me. Not a brief glance I beg, a passing word; But as Thou dwell’st with Thy disciples, Lord, Familiar, condescending, patient, free. Come not to sojourn, but abide with me. Come not in terrors, as the King of kings, But kind and good, with healing in Thy wings, Tears for all woes, a heart for every plea— Come, Friend of sinners, and thus bide with me. Thou on my head in early youth didst smile; And, though rebellious and perverse meanwhile, Thou hast not left me, oft as I left Thee, On to the close, O Lord, abide with me. I need Thy presence every passing hour. What but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s power? Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me. I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless; Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness. Where is death’s sting? Where, grave, thy victory? I triumph still, if Thou abide with me. Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes; Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies. Heaven’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee; In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.
