Yes, the magic hour is when the sun is low in the sky. The period of absolutely perfect light usually only lasts minutes, though.

No I didnt take the pic of the duck. I only took about half of the pics on my photostream, but if I see a pic I like I save it so I dont lose it. I dont even own a camera!!! But I might take up photography someday, since I have recently discovered that the reason I love art films so much is because of the superior cinematography.

I recently saw this film called "Days of Heaven." They shot a large portion of the film during the magic hour, and in the commentary the cinematographer explains how the whole crew of actors and technicians thought he and the director had gone insane since they prepared all day to film about only 20 minutes. But it was worth it, since its considered to be the most visually beautiful film ever made.

Anywho a couple of your pics reminded me of the magic hour

"Actually that shot was taken in a very old Russian camera “Zenith” model 1978, totally manual and no options at all, it has a problem with the shutter that it absorb extra light and I guess it was helpful in that shot. This image is without any software treatment or additional effect. It is totally original."

Yes, many do. For example, the the dude who shot for Microsoft's Vista wallpapers was hired through Flickr.
