He hasn't. But I was under the impression that he'd be doing it the day after July 4th, out of respect for the holiday.

We shall see. Check out ImWithFred.com for updates on his campaign and whatnot.

I got on myspace from the Register to Vote account this... for what its worth, who knows.
Exclusive Breaking News:
Body: Sources close to the Fred Thompson campaign have told Register To Vote that former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson will announce his official run for the republican nomination for president.

The announcement will be made in Atlanta, Ga during the Sean Hannity's Freedom Concert....
I was listening to Hannity on the way home from work and he was giddy about some big surprise tonight. It was hinted at during the final minutes.

It's 3 and a half hours after the concert started. Chances are news of him announcing will come through by 11pm EDT if he announced. It would definitely be the hottest story of the day. If you don't see anything by then, well, he's not announcing.

The danger definitely is F. Thompson postponing an official announce will make him seem reluctant. He really needs to announce soon, or all potential donors and supporters will look elsewhere.

I think that's already happened with Gingrich. It would be one thing if he kept resisting the call to run, but he's just toying around with the public now and I think most people are tired of the political manipulation that our elected officials have been using.

Oh definitely.
Newt has said that he will announce his decision to run this fall, possibly at an anniversary event celebrating the Contract With America. But if waits until then, and he has said that he would, he is not running.
Waiting until fall would not leave him enough time at all to raise the money needed to run in a race that has all the primaries taking place right after the first of the year. He would be tryng to raise his campaign money while everybody else woud be starting to really spend it. He would be just beginning his campaign while everyone else's primary campaigns would be in full swing.

And Newt knows all this.
He is not running.

I would bet that Newt will attend some great event and publicly throw his support behind Fred Thompson - if FT ever gets around to actually announcing.

Just read this... [NEWS LINK]
Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson is now likely to announce his presidential campaign in August, not mid-July as previously envisioned and will skip the Republican straw poll in Ames, Iowa, people familiar with Thompson’s thinking tell CNN.

The campaign-in-waiting is still being put together, and Thompson supporters say they want to have “100 percent” of the staff in place by the time of the announcement.

“Expectations are through the roof,” said one source. “We have to match those at every level. . . . We have to be more ready than any of these other guys.”
Funny thing is, Fred Thompson has been averaging 2nd place in the polls w/ out really spending a dime.

Currently:
Giuliani 26.7%
Thompson 19.0%
McCain 16.3%
Romney 10.2%
