tojo
When lustful thoughts enter your head get in the habit of saying a hail mary. It helps alot.
Amen. The Lord's been trying to get that across to me I think. I keep having dreams I'm attacked by trampy "female" demons, and I escape them by saying a Hail Mary. I wake up saying one aloud. I'm sure it's works if you're awake too. Edited July 7, 2007 by tomasio127

Mary is like super-kryptonite. she stomps on the serpent with her steel-toe army boots.
LouisvilleFan
Also (I do this and have heard people try to do this as well) try to replace a sinful behavior with a holy behavior. For my swearing it's one Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be after every bad word. After some moments I just give up and say a Rosary and/or Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Sometimes that can help as well. The other people have had great suggestions as well but most of all don't give up.
I had a similar thought, in that whenever I'm tempted to look at porn, to instead choose to pray a Rosary. Since it's basically a daily temptation, seems I'd end up praying a Rosary almost every day (something I've wanted to do for a long time, but never can find the time) and I'd probably find myself with more time for reading all these books I haven't finished yet. Of course, it's probably good to mix it up... read some Scripture or simply pray whatever's on my mind. Praying to St. Michael the Archangel has been incredibly helpful in the past. For some reason, I fell out of the habit of saying that prayer, probably because the rest of my prayer life also kinda fell to the wayside, but St. Michael kicks a**. johnnydigit
i've also been thinking about penance. i've been thinking that for the sins i am really trying to defeat, i should do a sacrifice or penance to help me not do it again. the regular confession and penance is great, but it may start to lose it's impact and just become repetitive and not really help you to convert. i'm not talking about flogging myself, but i think the whole "PENANCE! PENANCE! PENANCE!" is starting to sink in.. maybe something like negative reinforcement - taking away something you like, like no internet or computer.. or no music for a day. that's gotta hurt, and may help to change your mind at the moment of temptation. then there's fasting, which has so many benefits, including increasing your prayer life. maybe skipping a meal.. LouisvilleFan
There is a lot to be said for fasting, especially if you raise the bar a little from the easy fasting we do during Lent. Denying yourself that basic immediate craving helps build the discipline to deny other types of cravings. If you're into sports or running, that can also help build your discipline. And if you're not a runner, then become one

If you indeed decide to take up fasting, you could consider signing up at the e5men on-line community. An e5man offers up his fasts for the women in his life, mainly for his wife, and if he is unmarried or celibate, for his lady relations, the community they serve, consecrated ladies, and women in general. Some of my on-line acquaintances have joined this group. Edited July 10, 2007 by Innocent
