State which Oecumenical Council you consider greatest and why.

Because regulations limiting the number of poll responses to 15, some Oecumenical Councils have been grouped together. If the Oecumenical Council which you consider greatest is grouped with another Council or other Councils, chose response containing the Council you consider greatest.

That is a tough question. I voted for Trent because I find the decrees to be particularly phat, but many of the Councils rock my socks..

I'm currently working through a book that summarizes all of the councils but I'm not completely familiar with all of them, but I have a fairly decent grasp on Vatican I and Trent.

The Council of Jerusalem is not recognized by the Church as an Oecumenical Council.

BTW, if anyone wants a short summary of each of the Oecumenical Councils you can find one here:

You can also find the documents of all 21 Oecumenical Councils here:

We know that, but without that one, we might not have had any subsequent ones :)

Just a general question, and I am not trying to poke fun in any way, I am genuinely curious - why are you spelling it "Oecumenical" as opposed to Ecumenical? The Vatican's website uses the translation "Ecumenical," so why the "O" in the beginning?

Oh, and I feel bad picking favorites. It feels like I'm being asked which parent I like more, my mom or my dad. Its just not a question I know how to answer. :idontknow:

Your Brother In Christ,

Jeff

I believe that it is closer to the Latin word "oecumenicus". As an example the formal Latin way of referring to the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council would be "Sacrae Oecumenicae Synodi Vaticanae Secundae".

Yep, either spelling is correct and the one I use is closer to the Latin.
