It is not the first time students have faced school bans over Christian symbols. Earlier this year Samantha Devine, a 13-year-old Catholic schoolgirl, was told not to wear a crucifix on a chain because it breached health and safety rules at The Robert Napier School, a non-denominational mixed school in Gillingham, Kent.

The school said the only exception it would make to its uniform rule would be if the jewellery was an essential part of a particular religion, which they did not feel was the case for Miss Devine. She was free to wear a crucifix as a small lapel badge, but not on a chain, the school ruled.
My child would not be going to that school if they tried that.

Out of curiousity, has anyone heard of that program? Is it in line with the Catholic Faith? Could it be used in Catholic Youth groups?

but yeah its terrible. at first i thought it was in the US and i couldnt believe it! i guess us schools can do stupid things like that tooand do do stupid things like that...*sigh*.....i'm pretty scared for future generations. of course i guess that is always the case. people are always worried about the state of the world and where its going and their children's children's children. the world has just never been as small as it is now...

I read about it, and I don't disagree with the decision, actually. The school's uniform policy doesn't allow for rings, or any jewelery that is not integral to the person's religious beliefs. The school stated that they would have no problem allowing the girl to wear a cross or crucifix, but that a purity ring is not an integral symbol of Christianity (not to mention that we aren't the only ones against premarital sex). If a Muslim girl had been wearing it, I would imagine the same decision would have been made, so I don't see it as discrimination here. Just my opinion.

So kids are not allowed to wear any jewelry to school at all?

I agree. I choose to wear a chastity ring but it's not an integral part of my faith. It's just an exression of one of the things that I believe. If the school already banned jewelery, then I think that the girl was wrong for breaking the rules and disrespecting the decissions that the school has made.

That was the impression I got from that school. The schools closest to me here don't have that policy. A lot of the faith schools where I lived in FL didn't allow any jewelery either, now that I think about it.
bet u some of the school officials would be willing to hand out condoms though...
Um, please don't say that unless you have a good reason to believe they do.

In other words, don't just jump to conclusions based on the notion that all schools hand out condoms. My high school didn't. Heck, we had Jason Evert speak at our school. And we had a strict dress code.
