Laudate_Dominum
I am not exaggerating when I say that most of the Masses (excluding old rite) I've been to lately have featured at least one Haugen-Haas ditty. The song that I keep hearing over and over is called "All Are Welcome" and it goes something like this: Let us build a house where love can dwell and all can safely live. A place where saints and children tell how hearts learn to forgive. Built of hopes and dreams and visions, rock of faith and vault of grace; here the love of Christ shall end divisions: All are welcome All are welcome All are welcome in this place. I'm making this thread because I'm curious to know if this is typical outside of my own little region of parishes. Thanks folks! For those unfamiliar with these dudes here are some brief bios taken from the GIA Music site (http://www.giamusic.com/sacred_music/sm_artists.cfm).
Marty Haugen is a liturgical composer from Eagan, Minnesota. For the past fifteen years he has presented workshops across North America, Europe, Australia, and Central America for both Roman Catholic and Protestant liturgical ministers. His communion setting, Now the Feast and Celebration, and his vespers service, Holden Evening Prayer, are well known among Lutheran congregations, while his Mass of Creation is arguably the most widely used musical setting of the Ordinary among English-speaking Roman Catholic parishes. Together with David Haas, he began the popular GIA psalm series, Psalms for the Church Year. Marty has over 250 separate titles published through GIA on more than twenty recorded collections, including such songs as "We Remember," "Shepherd Me, O God," and "Gather Us In." His music appears in numerous GIA hymnals, as well as hymnals produced for Canadian and Australian Roman Catholics, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), and numerous other Protestant denominations.

David Haas resides in Eagan, Minnesota, where he is director of The Emmaus Center for Music, Prayer and Ministry and serves as campus minister / artist-in-residence at Benilde-St. Margaret’s High School in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, where he also teaches in the theology and music departments. Highly regarded as one of the preeminent liturgical music composers in the English-speaking world, he has produced more than 45 collections of original music. His liturgical works are sung and prayed throughout the world and appear in hymnals of many Christian denominations and in many languages. Recent projects with GIA include God Is Here; Biblical Way of the Cross; To Worship in Spirit and Truth: A Liturgical Preparation Process for Pastoral Musicians and Liturgical Leaders; an ongoing series of music and prayer services for youth, A Time to Pray (With the Old Testament, With the New Testament, For Justice and Peace); Table Songs II: Music for Communion (with Tony Alonso, Kate Cuddy, Rob Glover, and Lori True); Reach Toward Heaven; and Do This in Memory of Me (a setting of Holy Communion for Lutheran Communities). His live recording and video Glory Day continues to receive international acclaim, and he has served as a consultant for the various editions of the popular GIA hymnals Gather and Gather Comprehensive.
Laudate_Dominum
This is the verse that seems to strikes me most. Let us build a house where love is found in water, wine and wheat a banquet hall on holy ground where peace and justice meet Here the love of God through Jesus is revealed in time and space, as we share in Christ the feast that frees us. All are welcome All are welcome All are welcome in this place. I was watching a video of women priests doing some kind of sacrilegious Mass and this was the processional. It has also been the processional at a number of the Masses I've been to lately. Haugen-Haas music really gets around!
jiyoung
Yeah. I try to go to certain churches specifically to avoid this stuff--I'll even take p&w over this. That's saying something. lol. By the way, when I saw this thread's title, my eye twitched involuntarily.

Ash Wednesday
I confess that at times I have a tendency to sometimes view traditionalist Catholics as being elitist snobs. That is, until I think of, or listen to, a Haugen-Hass song. Then those feelings go away immediately.

Ash Wednesday
Anybody have the "Spirit and Song" book at their parish? *shudder* Again, yet another thing that makes me more sympathetic towards the Traditionalist movement.

I haven't quoted you yet. It's too bad that "Praise and Worship" signifies something tacky if that is the idea. What does good "p&w" get called? I've been listening to Haugen-Haas recordings for the past 20 minutes.. Let me just say I'm going to need a heavy dose of gregorian chant soon or my supper will end up all over my keyboard.
I think jiyoung is talking about the popular praise and worship songs like what gets played at many youth rallies and things. Considering that jiyoung and I have attended a certain "chapel" in common I think I know exactly what she's talking about. And P&W does not necessarily denote something tacky, many people love Praise and Worship but consider it to be inappropriate as Liturgical music. littleflower+JMJ
Ya know it was actually phatmass who really introduced the beautiful Latin Traditional hymns that I wasn't really accustomed to before because the song books I grew up weren't that great. Including LD's screen name too! LOL I remember asking you what it meant when I first met ya on here LD and not knowing what it was because I had never even heard those words before. Then I attended my diocese cathedral that plays alot of traditional songs and that was one of the songs! haha Now, I'm all about the beautiful songs and trying to learn more. : I've learned alot since I've gotten here--let me tell you! :
Laudate_Dominum
I just got done listening to dozens of Haugen songs and a couple of them were actually somewhat decent (but mysteriously I've never heard these ones at Mass, not that I want to anyway) while most were unbelievably you-know-what. Yikes. I'm listening to Haas tunes now and so far he's even worse. I just listened to a tune called "Ding Dong Merrily on High" and I can hardly believe it.. Wow. Paddington
I just listened to a tune called "Ding Dong Merrily on High" and I can hardly believe it.. Wow.
Ya know, I think I know that one. We sang it for music class at my Catholic elementary school. AND it was on a Muppets Christmas thing. At least some version of it. I question whether they (EDIT: they = those 2 guys, not the Muppets) wrote that one tho. It sounds kinda before their time. To go along with the mood.....the title makes me think of Ding-Dongs, the snack-cake. Edited June 24, 2007 by Paddington
