MichaelFilo
Comparing schismatic, error believing, groups to Catholicism would be denying the schism. I am willing to believe you heard wrong however. Or, that singular person was in error, as it is not Orthodox teaching to do worship icons. I could say, Jack Chick, a spreader of obvious lies, represents Protestantism, since most forms of Protestantism, all seem to be somewhat similiar, and not "that far off". St. Augustine taught many things that were unorthodox before his conversion, and if that is what you mean, then I agree. God bless, Mikey
ICTHUS
St. Augustine taught many things that were unorthodox before his conversion, and if that is what you mean, then I agree. God bless, Mikey
No, I mean that Rome has abandoned St. Augustine's teaching as a Doctor of the Church, especially in his anti-Pelagian writings, for she made a formal shift back to semi-Pelagianism at Trent. MichaelFilo
I do believe there is a thread for this discussion, so I won't say anything. So, back to it, I like Protestantism because it is one of the longer lasting heresies of the Church. This is only a good thing because it has yet to break down completely, as all other heresies do. It has a little bit of longevity, although it's falling apart. I do realize this isn't about why we like Protestantism, but in all fairness, I think this can go both ways. Brother Adam
I've never met, or even heard of a Catholic who worships statues or icons. Intentions. Intentions. Intentions.

Does anybody here speak Russian? Is there much of a distinction between 'worship' and 'venerate'?

Laudate_Dominum
To be fair, the seminarian was speaking Russian in the news, and someone was translating what he said. They could've mistranslated. Does anybody here speak Russian? Is there much of a distinction between 'worship' and 'venerate'?
It's possible that the Russian word that he used can translate to "worship" in English, but it certainly means worship in the sense of veneration and honor. It wasn't too long ago that word word worship in English was used to describe veneration. Hence, calling people "your worship" and all that. The Eastern Orthodox do not worship icons in an idolatrous sense, they venerate them. It's absurd to me to consider that he actually meant that he worships an icon as if it was God. God bless.
