Fertility Treatment Vs. Adoption

Hi, this is my first post on the phorums (phora??).

Anyhoo ... I recently met a woman on a TEC (Teens Encounter Christ) retreat. She just wrote an email asking for prayers: she and her husband have been having difficulties conceiving. She said that they had just taken out a $15,000 loan to do some kind of fertility treatment. I am not sure as to the specifics of the treament: is it in vitro? does it violate the marital act? Et cetera, et cetera. I know what the Church teaches about these, and I know that there are some that are less disordered than others.

My question is more about the fact that this woman is paying more than $15,000 to conceive a child, when there are so many already in this world who are in need of loving adoptive homes. Throw on top of that the three-million or more children that are aborted every year (that we know about, what with the RU486 pill and all). How do you feel about this?

As a devoutly Catholic man, I feel that if my future wife and are for some reason infertile, that I just want to adopt -- especially children who would have otherwise been aborted (not sure how to go about that one, though). I hope and pray that God will allow me to find a woman that feels the same. Still, I want to be compassionate to the desires of my wife to have a child of her own, and I myself have never been through that situation either, and I may change my mind then, too.

Basically, I'm just looking for others' opinions.

Pax Christi,
Kris

"Fertility treatment" could actually be any number of different treatments - it does not necessarily indicate in vitro or artificial insemination, etc.

btw, adoption runs about $15k as well. its pretty ridiculous how much the legal fees and adoption agencies "charge" considering these are babies nobody "wants."

Wow. That's pretty disgusting. :(

I really wish they would put some sort of family-rights bill through to take care of this sort of thing (capping what could be charged), or to make all adoption agencies state-run; that would be nice.

I would fear that state-run adoption agencies could possibly be obliged to give children to homosexual couples.

:( I heard this sad story about a little African girl whose parents had died. She was just sitting alone all day in this house made of bits of corrugated iron. She had no family. She was alone and hungry. She had an Aunt an uncle living in England who had 3 children and they wanted to adopt her, but they had to pay £3000 to be assessed and they couldn't come up with the money.

are you suggesting that homosexual couples are fit parents to raise children? because that is certainly not the proper family environment, and is potentially harmful to a child's moral, spiritual and psychological development.

here's just the tip of the iceberg of the Church's thoughts on this:
Cardinal Keith O'Brien of Edinburgh criticized a decision by Scottish officials to legalize adoption of children by homosexuals as "clearly not in the best interests of children."

"Such a measure would distort the understanding of the family, cause harm to children and promote the status of homosexual relationships," Cardinal O'Brien said, according to The Scotsman . "Homosexual unions are notoriously fragile and unstable, and the small number of homosexual couples living together make the suggestion that this measure would increase the number of potential adoptive parents unrealistic."

Deputy education minister Euan Robson made the announcement Saturday, emphasizing that unmarried couples could already adopt. Under current law, one of the two could file to adopt a child, Robson explained, while the second member seeks a residence order. "This confusing legal position needs to be addressed," Robson said, adding that the Scottish Executive would reform the adoption law to include provision for same-sex couples "at the earliest opportunity."

"To place children in such a situation is to put them in an environment that is not conducive to their full human development," Cardinal O'Brien added. "This is gravely immoral and in open contradiction to the principle, recognized in the UN Convention on the rights of the child, that the best interests of the child, as the weaker and more vulnerable party, are to be the paramount consideration in every case."
