RezaMikhaeil
There is a significant difference here. The Catholic Church (and the Orthodox Churches to a large extent - though they have rejected the Pope's teaching authority) follow the Tradition handed down continuously from the Apostles. The Protestants explicitly and deliberately rejected much of Catholic Tradition in the Protestant Revolt of the 16th Century, and started their own "traditions." Every protestant sect that followed has essentially had to start from scratch - lacking the continuity of Apostolic Tradition. It essentially comes down to every man for himself - the Tradition handed down from the Apostles being rejected.
That's my point thou, we follow what we believe tradition to be, as they do. Now of course I consider their tradition to be man-made, while ours isnt but that's my own opinion still...
homeschoolmom
Could we please get back on and stay on the topic of... (I can't believe this) castration? Thanks.
cmotherofpirl
Here's something to debate, sparked by a question posed to me (OK, so I have weird friends...) Would it be acceptable to have oneself castrated to if it seemed to be the only way to avoid temptations to sins of the flesh? assumptions: the person is male (kinda obvious), has formed bad habits of lust, wishes to break free, but cannot seem to do so, thinks that removing the hormonal source driving this would stop the temptations Ready? 3...2...1...DEBATE!!
Yes you have weird friends, no the guy shouldn't castrate himeself. Cold showers and taking up jogging works wonders. Sex is in the brain, not just the testicles, which is why castrating rapists doesn't work. See 1 Cor. 7.
N/A Gone
hehe...did you just compare marriage and castration? thats funny. anywho, some of the worst porno addicts I have counciled were married. Just because you are married does not stop the lust.
Budge
This is a nutty thread... Want to be like Origen? Self-mutilation is something satan loves, this is why people who beat themselves....are really being led by another spirit including those Opus Dei members who wear those chains around their thighs. IrishSalesian
I thought that passage always referred to cutting off the things in our life that keep us from doing the right thing.
I agree with you. I also think that if you Love God, then it should be no problem, to just stop! If you are giving your life to Him then it should not be a problem for you to say "God, I love you so much, Im not going to do it anymore!" I talked about this topic with my spiritual director and he told me, "Take it out of your vocabulary, it no longer exists, no longer will you be bound with these temptations, If you love God, stop." and I agree with him. I stopped, out of my love for Him, and the fact that it offends Him.

Groo the Wanderer
Heh. 3 pages from that one. nice. I figured what the general consensus would be, but thought it would be fun to throw out. Didn't see the Origen thing coming though - nicely done!
