Dave
Yesterday afternoon I got a major scare. I was in the laundry room, which is located in the basement at the end of this short hall. So after I got what I'd come in there for, I left the room to head back upstairs. Well, at the entrance to the hall, I noticed a snake with diamond-like markings slither past! I cried out and for a moment was scared to approach ... but then I decided that since the snake was going away from me, and since it was the tail-end part that I saw, I'd risk it. So I made a run for it, hollering the whole way for my mom! I know, I know, I'm such a big baby! I glanced at the snake and noticed it turning its head slightly to look at me running past. There was no rattle on its tail, but I noticed the triangular head common to all pit vipers. And since water moccasins -- young ones at least -- have patterns that are rather difficult to see, but I could see the patterns on this snake, by process of elimination I deduced that it was a copperhead. Anyway, I found my mom and told her what I saw (I was frantic, I might add). So she called my dad and got him to come straight home, but not without some difficulty, as he wanted to ask questions and even found the whole thing funny! In the meantime we weren't about to go back down to the basement! Eventually my dad got home, so all 3 of us went downstairs to look for the snake in the area where I'd first spotted it. And then my dad saw it -- on the floor in between a chair and an end table. So it wasn't all that easy to get to, but my dad got a shovel and brought the sharp edge down on the snake's neck and held it there, killing it and almost completely decapitating it in the process. Then my dad threw it outside. So we found the snake (I was scared we might have lost it only for one of us to come in contact with it later on when we least expected it) and killed it, but now I'm like, what if there are others in the house? Hell, right now I'm too afraid to even go down to the basement! Anybody wanna do my laundry for me from now on? Totus Tuus
We have found a lot of snakes on our property, including copperheads. That is scary, because they are very venomous. They are not too hard to shoot (unlike water snakes). I suppose it'd be intimidating to shoot inside, though, for fear of destroying something besides the snake... You can keep a shovel down there to behead them if you find another. I guess you just need to really find out if there's a nest down there, which could be the case. That would be bad news. Best wishes. And prayers!

Sojourner
and, while you can die from the cold, you can also have fun with it skiing broomball ice skating snowmen snowball fights snowforts ambushing younger siblings with it Snakes just are not nearly as fun. there's no such thing as a snakefort or snakeskating. And if you ambush a younger sibling with a copperhead you might get in really big trouble ...

alicemary
I think I would have died. Why do men think this is funny??? If there was one, there might be more. Don't know what to say to comfort you, other then use caution. And I hate snow, even more then I hate snakes.

IcePrincessKRS
I'm sorry. The insensitive part of me laughed. But that's really awful, I probably would have freaked out, too. I don't like the idea of poisonous things in my house. I hate snow. More than that I hate the cold. But I'll take northern winters over poisonous beasts in my house any day. Never thought I'd say that out loud, but the idea of a copperhead or worse in my house. Nuh-uh. Not doing it. Besides that, if we settle down in NY or MI I've got to be resigned to the fact that I will have lake effect snow for the rest of my life (and some of you poor folks don't even know what lake effect is!!!).
