be_thou_my_vision
HERE is a listing of all women's orders, contemplative and active, that are represented in Michigan. The motherhouse of the order may be in another state, but there are some sisters on mission in Michigan if they are listed here.
Chiquitunga
The Iron Mountain, Ada Parnell & Traverse City Carmels are all great!! The Grand Rapids Carmel (now in Ada Parnell, MI) is a foundation of the holy Carmelite, Mother Elias of the Blessed Sacrament. They have an Infant Jesus statue there that blushed and cried in her arms! no kidding! It's in the booklet about the history of the Carmel of Buffalo, Love Can Do All. The statue cried when the nuns were in a train fleeing from their country during the persecutions of the Church in Mexico. Some people were suspicious of the infant Mother Elias (disguised in lay clothing) was holding since it did not make a sound, and asked her about it, when the Infant Jesus statue let out a little cry! Iron Mountain & Traverse City are both foundations from there, so they are all connected and have ties to this great Mother foundress. Maybe someday she will be canonized.
I just went to the Ada Carmel last week and found them to be absolutely wonderful. It was my first time and only stayed for 24 hours over night so I wasn't able (allowed) to go within the enclosure, but the two extern sisters were great. And I also talked to both Mothers and the Novice Mistress behind the grill. They gave me a booklet all about their history too - real neat stories in there like the one you just told! Right afterwards I was interested in searching hard for any other communities in MI and also for communities that have similar prayerful silence, but minus the cloister. Marieteresa
Howdy! Just wanted to say that the Ada Carmel is awesome...I got a chance to visit them years ago. They dont allow girls into the cloister nor do they allow aspirants....Mother said that the postulancy is the aspirancy.

Maybe they are changing their thoughts right now because they have only 14 sisters which is the lowest number they ever had. Bernadette
ofpheritup
At the rate I'm going I will never get "in" with the Carmelites in Ada Michigan. The web site won't let me in I have been sitting here waiting for 15 minutes for something to "show up." I am looking at a yellow screen, no nuns, just screen. I have dial-up. Any suggestions? I'm just so historical....hmm, hysterical. No really, that was adorable it made me laugh. I finally got thru, I just let it run, this time it took 25 minutes but I got smart I went to watch TV while I waited.
