Norseman82
I got back from taking my dog for a walk after work, and when I sat down at the table found that one got stuck inside my shirt!
cmotherofpirl
THey haven't hatched here yet. They run in 13 or 17 year cycles.
geetarplayer
Here in Florida, either the 17-year cycles are all messed up or we just have a huge population of cicadas, because I've been listening to them every summer as far back as I can remember. Cicadas and thunderstorms are the things that tell me that it's summertime in Florida. -Mark

isilzha
There are cicadas that come every year too I believe (at least here). But these come just every 17 years... I'll be 40 next time they come... how depressing.
Norseman82
I saw a most amazing sight about an hour ago in fromt of my house. I was talking to my next door neighbor and I saw a cicada flying - only to be chased and caught by a bird mid-air!
Dismas
Anyone else having fun with the cicadas that are coming out? After weeks and weeks of hearing the Chicago Tribune talk about them I finally found some out in front of my house today. They make for some pretty neat photos too. As soon as I saw them in the tree I ran into the house to get my camera. I remember last time they came out, I think I was 6 or so. I wanted to make sure to get some good photos of them so I can remember them for the next 17 years.
It's funny, because just around the state border with Wisconsin, the cicadas disappear. isilzha
I split my time between Chicagoland and Kenosha, WI and its true, once you get close to the border there aren't any.
isilzha
What the cicadas have taught us 10 bits of wisdom by Tribune restaurant critic Phil Vettel By Phil Vettel Tribune restaurant critic Published June 24, 2007 Savor every moment. Good times can be farther apart than you know. Whether you consider it clean or dirty, you still don't want to get too close to a dog's mouth. It doesn't matter that you fly badly. Only that you fly. Be patient. Even bottom feeders get their day in the sun. It's amazing how little you really need to throw a good party. Stupidity and ineptitude are not insurmountable when you have numbers on your side. Make all the noise you want, but it's common decency to quiet down during bedtime. Beware excessive pickiness. Spend too much time looking for your perfect match, and life will pass you by. Persistence pays off. It can seem like forever, but 17 years can come and go in a hurry.

MRSannie
UGH! They are disgusting! Our dachshund, Nella, toys with them, eats them, then throws up in her crate later! I have had it! The noise is sooooooo annoying! You cannot go anywhere without stepping on them, having them hit you in flight, or hearing the sound of a clicking, dying bug in the grass! Can you tell they have been here a while??!! There is one in the bottom of my postal box, and it is too gross to fish out, and it is dead, and now the problem is the decaying bodies! There are folks here who use their LEAF BLOWER to clear out the bodies from driveways and patios!
