cappie
Poland's government took its drive to curb what it sees as homosexual propaganda to the small screen on Monday, taking aim at Tinky Winky and the other Teletubbies. Ewa Sowinska, government-appointed children rights watchdog, told a local magazine published on Monday that she was concerned the popular BBC children's show promoted homosexuality. She said she would ask psychologists to advise if this was the case. In comments reminiscent of criticism by the late US evangelist Jerry Falwell, she was quoted as saying: "I noticed (Tinky Winky) has a lady's purse, but I didn't realise he's a boy." "At first I thought the purse would be a burden for this Teletubby ... Later I learned that this may have a homosexual undertone." Poland's rightist government has upset human rights groups and drawn criticism within the European Union by apparent discrimination against homosexuals. Polish Education Minister Roman Giertych has proposed laws sacking teachers who promote "homosexual lifestyle" and banning "homo-agitation" in schools. But in a sign that the government wants to distance itself from Sowinska's comments, Parliamentary Speaker Ludwig Dorn said he had warned her against making public comments "that may turn her department into a laughing stock". The 10-year-old Teletubbies, which features four rotund, brightly coloured characters loved by children around the world, became a target of religious conservatives after Falwell suggested Tinky Winky could be homosexual. Paddington
I have an old friend who grew up in Falwell's church and knew Jerry Falwell very well. I knew this old friend at the same time that the Tinky-Winky controversy came out and so I made a crack to him about it. He corrected me and said that: 1. it was not Falwell. 2. it was sb writing for Falwell's magazine. 3. this writer was merely quoting a secular source. I don't know if my friend was 100% correct, but hey.

Sojourner
I can't believe we are talking about this again. Sheesh. Don't people have better things to do than speculate about the sexual orientation of teletubbies?? Besides, as a good friend just said, "He's not gay. If he were, he wouldn't be carrying a red purse -- he's purple."
IcePrincessKRS
I don't care about Teletubbies one way or another, but WOOT! for Poland anyhow for taking a stand against homosexual-ization in places where it doesn't belong (ie, in front of little children especially). Or maybe the clash of colurs is symbolic of his desire to clash with mainstream culture. Or maybe he's a fictional character with a ten-word vocabulary designed for the amusement of pre-verbal children who wouldn't know what a homosexual undertone was if it bit them on the nose. Personally, I don't see how you can watch Teletubbies and get a sexual overtone of any sort. Pretty much the last thing on my mind when I've watched Teletubbies is sexuality of any sort. Sojourner
I think he did try to claim that Spongebob was gay ... again, who watches Spongebob and thinks of sex? I can guarantee you no normal 5 year-old does. Even most 10 year olds wouldn't.
