Theologian in Training
I know Brother Agustino...I knew he looked familiar, and wondered what happened to him...now I know. He was in the minor seminary with me many many years ago. Of course, I knew him by a different name...small world

kafka
this is one of the stupidest things I have ever seen. Lay people can have bands not friars, friars shouldnt. We in the world depend on their prayers. They are permitted some recreation of course but a rock band isnt fitting for a monk or a friar. I recommend they read "Ladder of Divine Ascent." What on earth would Saint John Climacus think of them Edited May 27, 2007 by kafka

I recommend they read "Ladder of Divine Ascent." What on earth would Saint John Climacus think of them[/quote] I think Our Lord looks kindly upon them. They are using their music as a tool for evangilization. And for clarification, they are not monks. They are friars. And they are active-contemplative. So yes, they spend time in prayer. They are not the type of religious, though, that pray at all hours of the day in front of the Blessed Sacrament. They minister to the people. They feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and help the doubter to believe. They are a beautiful order and it is sad that you are dismissing them so quickly. They have done many great things in the short time they have been around and their founding fathers are some of the most highly regarded in the Catholic community. jmjtina
I haven't seen the link but I do know about Catholic Underground. Franciscans are the most visible order in the culture today in my opinion. Many are assuming they do not pray? As if they don't pray? Or don't pray enough? I thought that was EVERYONE'S job. They are not living a scandalous life, but living by St. Francis' motto: Preach the Gospel at all times, if necessary, use words. The negative comments remind me of the time when in Adoration, a young family comes in, children in tow, and the "noise" they make, many gave disgusted looks at the disruption and left. Not seeing how this young family was teaching thier children about Jesus in the Eucharist. Don't get caught up in the noise.
kafka
I am sure these friars do a lot of good and I am not judging their souls or condemning that they dont pray enough. My whole idea is that a rock band ministry should be for lay people. It seems too worldly for a religious community to use a band as a ministry. I honestly would like to know what Saint Francis would think of this??? Edited May 27, 2007 by kafka
jmjtina
Honestly, I'll let you know. I'm taking care of first class relics of St. Francis of Assisi and St. Francis Xaiver while my priest is away.

This group of friars is FIRMLY rooted in the Mass, Eucharistic Adoration, and many hours of praying the Liturgy of the Hours daily. This apostolate of music minsitry flows-out of their prayer life and they are still EXTREMELY committed to living the radical life of Saint Francis. Their poverty is extreme and they haven't traded-in their habits. In this case, one needs to look at the faithful fruits also. Unlike many of the wacky religious of the 60's, 70's, and 80's, these brothers are spreading authentic Catholicism in teaching and devotion and the fruits are speaking for the Holy Spirit's involvement. Stan Fortuna, who is a Franciscan Friar of the Renewal?? do you feel as if he should not have used his gifts to evangelize because he is ordained and not a layman? www.francescoproductions.com what about JP2's call for "new evangelization"? p.s. their order is not a "rock band ministry". The Catholic Underground is just an event that they have brought about. it is clear that what you know about them was formed completely by that video
