Public Display Of Worship Or Devotion

Sometimes it bugs me but I do not know what is in the heart of people so I will not judge. Baseball players doing the Sign of the Cross in the batter's box always looked insincere to me. What I mean is, they could have done it on the on deck circle when there were not thousands of eyes on them.

How about unsused Rosaries hanging from the rear view mirror?

I guess you can look at it like there are so few celeberities and people who openly portray their Faith so any little thing is a good example. I personally am very afraid of crossing that line of "showing off" my devoutness or lack thereof.

What do yo think?

The unused rosary thing sometimes bugs me.

When we did the Life Chain, and stood there with our pro-life signs, many times the people NOT honking would be people with a rosary hanging over the rearview mirror. -_-

It's true.

I think everyone is entitled to do what they want. It bugs me if the person is hypocritical about it, but that just provides us for opportunities to minister.

hypocrisy in general bugs me. I don't think that excludes some public displays of devotion.

But this is not to say that public displays of devotion are only done by hypocrites.

How do you know the baseball player making the sign of the cross isn't saying "Lord, thank you for my talent. Help me to use this for you" ?

My sister and I have a rosary in our car hanging from the mirror. I use it if I'm waiting in the car, and also to show that I am a pround Catholic. It bugs me when people thank that have a rosary on the mirror will save you from accidents, that's kinda superstitious, not the point of having one. There are some famous people who bug me w/ their sign of the cross and such, esp. those who live wild lives (i hope it doesn't sound like I'm judging them). Anyway, there is a figure skater that I look up to who does that, and he is very religious and says it a lot in interviews. He also does it more reverently that some, and it just helps him calm down...at least that's what he says.

I don't know. Go back and read my post. I specifically said that I did not know the hearts of people so I will not judge.

Laudate_Dominum

I think it's great when people make public religious acts like the sign of the Cross. I wish it was common and that everyone made the sign of the Cross all the time. I wish everywhere you went you would see people praying constantly.

I guess you can look at it like there are so few celeberities and people who openly portray their Faith so any little thing is a good example. I personally am very afraid of crossing that line of "showing off" my devoutness or lack thereof.

I don't see these things as showing off devoutness at all. It is publicly professing one's Christian Faith. As we should! Our religion is not merely a personal matter, it's public. In the early days Christians could not do such things because they would be executed by the state. When Christianity was legal Christians began doing to sign of the Cross in public and it was how people showed that they were Christian. It's good to be reminded of God and Jesus all the time. I also think it's a good practice to make the sign of the Cross and possibly say a little prayer whenever you pass by a Catholic Church or pass by some holy statue or image. This is my opinion on the matter.

Laudate_Dominum

I didn't specifically answer the basic question.

Public Display Of Worship Or Devotion, Does it bug you?

Actually I'd say it's edifying. I feel built up a little bit after seeing someone with the courage to indicate their faith in a public context (such as a sports guy signing himself). It seems to me that they are showing that God is of central importance in their life. It would be beautiful if this was the norm in our world.

I don't mind any of the actions mentioned. I think that sharing the Sign of the Cross is good in baseball. I do it before I play a tennis match and it really helps me get my thoughts together and calm me down. It seems ok to me.

I agree w/ Laudate_Dominum!! Anyway, I highly, highly, highly, doubt that wearing a crucifix is bad. I mean i was watchin the religious catalogue on EWTN and Mother Angelica was talking about how important they were. I think that it is a great way to express your pride in Christianity!!
