What do you think, Bat-fans?

*sigh* I've heard this rumor for a while and I must say that the only thing that Heath Ledger really has for the whole 'Joker' look is the mouth...As a HUGE Batman fan I must say that I don't know what I think about their choice yet...I can still only see him as a gay cowboy :sadder: Although this Joker is not going to be like the old Joker supposedly. I've heard he's going to be more disturbing in this one. I can't wait for it to come out next year!

In this one, I think they want to make the Joker to be the maniacal, murderous, boss that he is. Just straight up thug.

The pick reminds me of Dead Presidents as well.

Yeah, it'll be hard to imagine any one else as the Joker... I'll have to wait and see how Heath does...

I don't think Jack Nicholson's Joker was the greatest, but I'm not sure about the scars with this new intrepetation of The Joker, hopefully it'll still be substantially faithful to the original character, unlike the villains from Batman Begins especially Scarecrow, which I thought was the worst part of the film.
So, I guess dramatically altering characters is expected in this new Batman series.

I am so pleased with Christopher Nolan's interpretation of the last one that I don't believe this choice is going to be a problem.

The director is trying to stick as close to the original comic books as he can.

I didn't think they did such a bad job with Scarecrow (though he really isn't my favorite villian). Nolan is going for a more understated "realistic" approach to the characters, and a literal transposition of the character from the comics- full costume with straw and hat, corny back-story, etc. - would have likely come off as quite silly and campy - exactly the sort of thing this series is trying to get away from. Ra's al-Guhl was perhaps a bit more problematic, though I thought Liam Neeson put in a good performance with the character. Again, trying to avoid the more blatantly fantastic, over-the-top elements (immortality, Lazarus Pits, etc.).

Expect similar treatment for the Joker. The Black Dahlia-style "cut smile" is disturbing, though not looking much like the comic book Joker. The possibility of this being self-inflicted mutilation makes the character particularly disturbing - a truly deranged sicko. It is rumored that the Joker in TDK starts out as just a nutcase in clown make-up, who becomes horribly disfigured sometime into the movie.
This plays into the "realistic" approach - looking truly mutilated, rather than the fantastic "falls-into-vat-of-acid-and emerges-looking-just-like-a-clown" origin.

TDK people say they are doing something completely different with the Joker in this flick than has been done before - no point in trying to redo a Jack Nicholson or Cesar Romero-style Joker (and besides, you can't out-Jack Jack).
As for the Ledger nay-sayers, people also said Nicholson was too old and fat.
