Agency Approves a Birth Control Pill Halting Periods Indefinitely

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: May 23, 2007
WASHINGTON, May 22 (AP) — The first birth-control pill meant to put a stop to a woman’s monthly period indefinitely has won federal approval, the manufacturer said on Tuesday.

When taken daily, the pill, called Lybrel and made by Wyeth, can halt women’s menstrual periods indefinitely and prevent pregnancies.

It is the latest oral contraceptive approved by the Food and Drug Administration to depart from the 21-days-on, 7-days-off regimen that had been standard since birth-control pill sales began in the 1960s, and is the first made to put off periods altogether when taken without a break.

Wyeth, based in Madison, N.J., plans to start Lybrel sales in July. The company said it had not determined a price. The pill contains a low dose of two hormones already widely used in birth-control pills, ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel.

Most of the roughly 12 million American women taking birth-control pills do so to prevent pregnancy. Others rely on the hormonal contraceptives to control acne or regulate their monthly periods.

Some nontraditional pills like Yaz and Loestrin 24 Fe shorten monthly periods to three days or fewer. Seasonique, an updated version of Seasonale, reduces periods to four times a year. With Lybrel, 59 percent of women who took it in tests had no bleeding after six months.

However, 18 percent of women dropped out of studies because of spotting and breakthrough bleeding, according to Wyeth.

Still, Dr. Vanessa Cullins, vice president for medical affairs at the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said Lybrel would be welcomed by the woman seeking relief from the headaches, tender breasts, cramps and nausea that can accompany monthly periods.

Jean Elson, a University of New Hampshire sociologist, said the pill left her with mixed feelings.

“I certainly can understand the benefits of taking these kinds of medications, but for most women menstruation is a normal life event, not a medical condition. Why medicate away a normal life event if we’re not sure of the long-term effects?” said Ms. Elson, who researches medical sociology.
Gosh, I hate the news outlets. The Today Show covered this news this morning and said something to the effect of "Critics say that halting a women's period will have detrimental effects to her health" and then they had a doctor on that said something like "Lebrel is safe" blah blah blah. And I'm thinking, "Yeah, you say that because you are being paid by the drug companies".

I agree with the bolded part at the end of the article.

The paper this morning says "we don't know what kind of adverse health effects this pill has over the long term". Let's see, the first person who drank cyanide probably didn't know the health effect either. Do they honestly think we can fool God or God does not have consequences set up for mutilating womanhood?

Yeah, I agree with that bolded part, too. I know my GYN in the US told me I could take the pill and just not worry about the 7 placebo pills, and not have periods, if I chose. Didn't seem to get the idea that I wasn't interested in the pill. :idontknow: It's just sad that people see this as something that needs to be fixed, when it is a natural part of our lives. Our hormone levels are supposed to fluxuate over the course of the month! Goodness.

You know, that's kind of funny...how come feminists are so afraid to be female?

This is going to sound peculiar, but...I like my period. It is fascinating how the human body works. We should appreciate that and be thankful for it, rather than trying to mutilate ourselves. How can anybody think this is a good idea?

Oh thats not peculiar at all Seriously, I feel the exact same way. I think that this whole "lets mess up our beautiful cycles by pumping our bodies full of sythetic horomones" is medically irresponsible. I like my cycle, and everything that comes with it!

If we don't have our cycles, how do we make excuses for eating large amounts of chocolate?

Well, it just doesn't make sense, while people are complaining about our food being filled with hormones, yet, they think nothing of using birth control hormones. People who are so concerned about things being natural and healthy, and they go and fill themselves with junk like that.

I find this not the least bit suprisingly, but still absolutely appalling. Seriously do these ppl have nothing better to do than fix "problems" that have already been solved. This is ridiculous.

This is wrong is so many ways I don't even know where to begin...

I would not say that I like everything that goes with it! I do like the chocolate comment. On a side note Extra Dark chocolate Lindt balls. Also calms the raving lunatic once a month! I wonder what this will do to the average women taking this? Think about how freaky they will be hormonally? You think PMS was bad? SCARY! :furious: JC

i think its tragic the way that people keep trying to play God. I find total beauty in my womanhood and when i saw this new pill (or better described as poison) on the news, i just shook my head.

ugh! :( this is so sad! why would anyone want to do that? God made us the way He wanted us to be - He didn't make us so we could change ourselves!

and MissScripture's right. I don't know what I would do if my excuse to eat chocolate was taken away... ^_^
