reelguy227
I think I might have asked this before, but where can I find a list of Catholic Colleges that really follow the Church's teachings? Those that would be in the same group as Ave Maria and Stuebenville. Thanks much Ricky

Thanks much Ricky
I don't know where a list really is, but here are some that I know of (and will be applying to myself next year). I'm applying here: Ave Maria Stuebenville Christendom College St. Thomas Aquinas College (in Santa Paula, CA) Here are some I've heard really good things about, but I'm not sure if I am applying too. John Paul the Great Catholic University (really new. I believe it opened in 04' or 05') Belmont Abbey College Magdalen College Benedictine College In Jesus and Mary, Marie

You'd only be going there if you're going for media stuff.

I know people who really want to go there, and they are really solid Catholics. But still I have heard some not so great things about Gonzaga too. Pray about it. I would not say Gonzaga's Catholic identity is as firmly known as Ave Maria's or Stuebenville's. CrossCuT
I was told that though Ave Maria is an AWSOME school, they are not certified by like the state or something so their degrees are not worth anything. Or something like that....ANYONE ELSE KNOW ABOUT THIS?

EcceNovaFacioOmni
Ave Maria's accreditation information: http://www.naples.avemaria.edu/academics/u...ms/accredit.asp I don't know what that means, but it looks like they have some legitimacy. ardent1
I go to a little treasure called St. Mary's University in San Antonio, TX. The Marianists (Society of Mary and Daughters of Mary Immaculate, along with lay Marianist groups) take every student in as family. http://www.stmarytx.edu There are many students working hard to drench the campus in our Catholic identity (myself included - yay!). reelguy227
I already checked out Benedictine, they don't offer the majors I'm looking for. But thanks anyway. Has anyone heard of College of St. Benedict-Saint John's University. It's a joint University in Minnesota? Seemed pretty good to me. Petrus
J.M.J. I've heard good things and I have heard bad things about Gonzaga. I heard someone new is over them now and wants to bring back the Catholic identity to the school. How that is going to go and if it is going to go at all I don't know. I know people who really want to go there, and they are really solid Catholics. But still I have heard some not so great things about Gonzaga too. Pray about it. I would not say Gonzaga's Catholic identity is as firmly known as Ave Maria's or Stuebenville's. In Jesus and Mary, Marie
I go to Gonzaga. There are some good elements here and some bad. I could go on and on with describing things here because I am one of the "orthodox Catholics" who is most active and vocal in pushing for true Catholic identity. To put it simply, Gonzaga is not on the same level as the other well known orthodox colleges mentioned in this thread. However, our president, Fr. Spitzer, is really great, he is an awesome philosopher and scientist, who is very good with the students (I have had him over for dinner at my house along with a couple other orthodox Jesuits!). He is very pro-life, and an active writer on topics from metaphysics to culture in America. There are some other good Jesuits as well, but then there are the Jesuits here who are openly heretical. The Religious Studies department is horrible. The history department is good, and the philosophy department has some good professors as well. I am majoring in Electrical Engineering, which is why I ended up at Gonzaga and not at a college which is fully orthodox. More bad: the University Ministry is not that great, they talk to much about your spiritual path rather than the Catholic faith, and the Masses they put on leave much to be desired (luckily, there is a beautiful Gregorian chant Mass on campus every week, which is said by diocesan priests as well as some Jesuits). The student body is very secular, and there is a lot of partying and foolishness associated with the stupid basketball team, kind of like you would find at any state school. There is a lot of debate about persons with SSA, there is a club on campus which calls itself a "Gay Straight Alliance" which does not agree with Catholic teachings, and so on. Luckily there is some good, there is a Catholic fellowship of students which gets together often to pray in front of PP and we have Lord's Day Meals together every few weeks, and there is a Right to Life club (of which I will be president in the fall) and we do good stuff. The university does not allow PP or others like that to speak on campus, so there are limits, but the Religious Studies department has a speakers series which basically teaches heresy and criticizes Church teaching, and all the Call to Action types from Spokane show up for those, as well as students getting extra credit from their religion professors. I can't recommend Gonzaga as a good Catholic school. I like it, and I like Spokane quite a bit, but I feel like I am in the minority here (although interestingly the heretics claim that they are the minority and are oppressed by people like me). PM me if you have any more questions, I would be happy to go into more detail. Some of the orthodox Catholics publish a magazine called the Gonzaga Witness with various articles and such every month, you can take a look if you want, I have a few articles in there: http://www.gonzagawitness.com/
