Thought you might like to know that Pirates and Narnia will be making their ways to Blu-Ray fairly soon

Also, the Matrix collection will be making it to HD-DVD next week
Probally so.

Is there really a signifcant difference?
I refuse to rent or watch "normal" DVD's, as a result, and am in the process of switching over my library of the movies I really like, even though most of these High Def DVD players or players designed for it can "upconvert" to HD or near HD quality. For Christmas someone got me Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Johnny Depp) and if you ever saw it and remember how vivid it was when he went into the factory, with HD DVD it is not only blazing but you can see each blade of grass, the finest finest details. When you watch golf (which I did at my aunt's house the other night) I could see the flies buzzing by the camera, and even the one that almost got hit by the club during the swing.

The difference is immediately apparent, but of course the main factor that has to also be taken into consideration is the type of TV you have and how high of a High Def standard it can go (720p 1080i or 1080p) and how high the DVD itself can go.

But, to answer your question, yes, there is an immediate difference, an amazing difference...I have an HD DVD add-on to my 360, but I have also seen the PS3 and Blu-Ray is also amazing.

And that is only video, don't get me started on sound ;)

Right now, the only source of HD content is video I download from the internet (my monitor is 1920x1200, so if I hooked up an xbox 360 w/ hd dvd player, it'd be quite sweet). (Zudeo has some good 720p stuff, btw) Yes, it makes a huge difference, but I'm budgeting my money right now towards things of infinite definition w/ true 3 dimensionality and 5 sense interactivity. (plus, I'd get the elite version @ $480, plus microsoft wheel $150? plus hddvd $200? plus vga cables $40? and I definitely don't have that kinda money unless I want to put off everything for another month or two... Then I'd probably find excuse to be "forced" to buy a 1080p LCD HDTV...)

Could be worse things to spend your money on ;)

Also, VGA does HD. I am not sure if it goes all the way to 1080p but I do know it does HD with the Xbox, but if you are going to pick up the elite, you really need to have something to plug that HDMI into...

BTW, my aunt and uncle have the new Samsung 1080p that sports 3 HDMI connected to Denon receiver (eh) and Kef speakers. When they watch a movie (only upconverted, they don't yet have an HD DVD or Blu Ray) it sounds like a theater...and like the walls are going to come down :)

I know Heroes is coming out in High Def ... but I will probably buy it regular since I don't have an HD player.

FWIW that is the only TV series I've ever considered buying ... it is SO good and even though I won't watch it right away I definitely want to have it.

I bought Eternal Sunshine of Spotless Mind for HD DVD and man, I forgot what a great movie that is. Plot is amazing, dialogue is beautiful and the premise is unique. Besides, in HD it is ten times better, and much more vibrant...I just wish Microsoft would get their act together on digital sound...it is so low I need to put the subtitles on...

And Terra, I am doing the same thing. Once I found out it will be released on HD DVD in August, I stopped watching the show until I can get that collection. Apart from this show, my TV viewing consists of cartoons and the Discovery channel...a welcome change in TV viewing :)

Oh, I also saw clips of the Matrix in HD...looks good!

The money bet is on Blue-Ray. It has better marketing (and is using techniques that are better left unmentioned.)

Well, see, that is what I thought too, especially since more movie companies are supporting them, but, I think the race is still even, given the exclusive releases on HD DVD and Blu-Ray. Granted, Blu-Ray will be putting out Disney's favs (Pirates, Cars, Narnia etc.) but HD is putting out Matrix, Heroes, and a few others I cannot think of at the moment, so I think the race is still close.

Maybe this will be one of those things where neither one wins, until a newer more Hi-Def technology comes out...who knows :idontknow:

I'm gonna wait until the HD DVD and Blue Ray war is over. I still have betamax tapes somewhere in my house.

I did buy a 42" LCD Bravia and got the Directv HD package. They're going to over 100 channels before the end of the summer. The channels that I get right now are pretty awesome but I find myself watching odd shows like competitive cycling just because its in HD

Yeah, I think a lot of people are wary about repeating the VHS vs Beta issue...
I had always wanted a Betamax VCR when they were still competing.
