Veritas
Just a tip in internet etiquette: Do not type words in all caps. It comes across as being brash and angry. Or at the very least, it's not indicative of good writing skills. That is not an attack on any one person (even though it looks like I'm only talking about the person above me, I'm not). It's just a bit of advice to everyone else.
+ Duly noted. Sometimes I do it because 1. A nun I know always does it to make a point and I've learned it from her 2. I want to draw attention to a particular word and it's an easy way to do it. I hope the post above doesn't come across that way, but I do know your right -sometimes I feel that way when I read posts in caps. Generally, I do write WELL not good, while trying to be good
Lil Red
+ Except, Lil'Red, do you realize that the Pope specifially called for religious to wear a "recognizable habit"? No, not all non-habited nuns are "bad" but, obviously if the Pope asks you to do something, it's better to do it! And, it's okay to talk about that. Another big part of this conversation was the almost unanimous belonging of said sisters in the LCWR, which if you look on their website, promotes a number of issues contrary to Church teaching in their RESOLUTIONS e.g. the homosexual lifestyle and homosexual behaviour.
whatever. don't point to me being the fall guy here. i'm all for orthodoxy. i never said it wasn't okay to talk about it. i was NOT trying to defend anyone or any religious organization. i just was trying to say that sometimes we assume too much from a nun/sister by if they wear a habit. and yes, often when i read your posts, Veritas, there are many things that i agree with you on, but not the tone you take. actually i agree with you a lot. ya know, maybe i'm just tired and cranky. ignore me. Tone is an interesting thing, also. But that is probably another conversation for another day. I think it's because in real-life I'm pretty soft-spoken and so people aren't "threatened" by my being direct because they can see all the facial with it and they realize I'm not being condescending or angry, I'm just providing information and I'm usually smiling when I say it (not saying that you are "threatened") but on pm, it's totally lost. Interesting how it changes in translation. Edited June 29, 2007 by Veritas

Veritas
agreed
+ I guess I always try to give people the benefit of the doubt that unless what they are saying is personally, explicitly, and directly derogatory -name calling, or personal "put-downs" that sort of thing- they are saying things in a nice way. I had a philosophy prof once tell us as we were starting online phorums for the class that "only a fool takes offense where none was intended". Again, not referring to you or anyone in particular, just reflecting on a general statement, which has helped me a lot. Maybe I ask too much? Now as far as WHAT they are saying, that is fair game for discussion.
Sojourner
I have had people misread things I've written ... one in particular mistakenly believed a paragraph I wrote was directed at him and write a scathingly personal post in response. Ouch. And I've misread people as well, sometimes pretty badly. I try (although not always successfully) to take a few deep breaths and give the benefit of the doubt, then if I need clarification to ask for it. There are definite limitations to communications via this medium, and acknowledging those limitations and giving grace accordingly is important. I fail to see how I or any other Catholic should feel guilty for not accepting hers. If she isn't open to a Catholic perspective, then all we can do is pray for her...and that's how most here chose to respond.
I'm confused... I don't know who Belinda was, but didn't the OP just state that she was a novice in a religious order? Was it a non-Catholic order?
