N/A Gone

Recommended Posts

My dad gave me an Icon for graduation. We know very little about it. Does anybody know where to find more information on it? Or possibility recognize it?

I am very excited about this. But I do not know much about it. (sorry for killin the bandwidth)

I don't know, but it kind of looks like the icons of Our Lady of Czestochowa.

Thanks Era. Brother Adam said something similar (but the boy could not spell)

Any idea on the date or how many are like this?

I'm not sure. The icon itself looks physically pretty old, any idea where your father got it? I believe there is a tradition that the image of Our Lady of Czestochowa was first painted by St. Luke the Evangelist. I'm no expert on iconography, but it does seem to have some western influence in the way it is painted. Which could just be me pretending to sound like I know something about sacred art.

I have a Byzantine icon called the Glykophilousa of Don. It's only a reproduction though. It gives some information on the back. This icon may have a name as well.

Ask around please.

A friend of my dad's runs numerous rental props in CA and this was LEFT at one of the props. Thats HUGE!!!!!

Part of me wants to kill the evening and study the greek writing on it.

It has what looks like a year 1831? If you can not read the script, here is a touched up image to better read it.

Ha I only saw the year after tweaking the image. But now I'm more unsure that 1831 could be a year, I recall 1831? or something similar on a medal of Our Lady I had. Anyway This maybe better...

It looks like an icon of the Virgin Theotokos Unfading Rose, and -- in my opinion -- this is confirmed by the blown up portion of the text, which appears to say: "[r]odon to amaranton" (i.e., Unfading Rose) in Greek."

Here are a couple of images of the Unfading Rose icon that I found on the internet:

God bless,
Todd

P.S. - I believe that the first letter of the word "rodon" at the beginning of the inscription has been damaged (i.e., has been scratched off or is covered by dirt).

Revprodeji,

You may want to post your pictures at the Byzantine Forum in order to confirm the identification of the icon and to get more details about its history. Moreover, someone there may also be able to tell you whether you should get it restored or not, and how to go about doing it properly.

God bless,
Todd

P.S. - Icons are filled with divine energy and are meant to be venerated.

I could forward the pics to Father Joncas. He taught us some basics of how to identify icons, but it was just one small part in a very big, complicated task. He seems to be knowledgeable in the area. Plus, he's got a bunch of cool old icons in his house.
