When I lived in Wilmette the motherhouse of Sisters of Christian Charity was there. When they closed and sold the motherhouse, many things were for sale including the elaborate "machines" they used to use to starch, stretch, and iron their headgear before they went to a modified habit. It truly looked like Frankenstein's basement! One of the sisters showed me pics that were taken in the 1950's while the entire laundry process was taking place. I can only imagine the chapped and burned hands that were acquired from the startch and mangles. and all for the glory of God and the good of the community.
