It's a surplice because they are canonesses and canons wore the surplice instead of the scapular. That is what the Dominicans originally wore until Our Lady gave us the scapular.
But I've never heard of the women wearing a surplice.
Thank you Sister for this information. You are very knowledgable.

Here is a slideshow with some pictures of the Franciscan Sisters Handmaids of the Lord (sorelle francescane Ancelle del Signore) a new franciscan-inspired community recognized by the bishop of Como (Italy) in 1988:

http://www.chiesadimilano.it/or/ADMI/pagin...oad/1_lenno.swf

They live in the ancient abbey of Acquafredda in the town of Lenno, just on the borders of the Lake of Como.
In the abbey also lives an old capuchine friar, padre Odorico, wich is 80 years old and quite famous for his sanctity of life.

on the top there's a link to the site in English

It says it's not actually the community's site, but about them made by people from their prayer groups. :j

I have seen a lot of those Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist in my diocese. I think they have a community here. I don't know much about their ministry, but I have seen them at various events on on the Catholic campus.

The Fraciscan Sisters of the Eucharist are very educated... they do all kinds of work. Psychology, medicine, farming, ect. They remind me a lot of the Religious Sisters of Mercy.

Sisters at Saint Walburga Abbey, cloistered Benedictines in Colorado.
I know that there is a Saint Walburga Abbey in Colorado but these Sisters are from Germany, exactly from my hometown Eichsteatt there are also Benedictine Sisters and the Abbeys name is also St. Walburg because her grave is there and i think they made a foundation in the 1940's in the USA wich maybe is the Colorado Abbey...
