How To Quit A Job?

Recommended Posts

I recently started working at Dairy Queen, and well, I don't think it's working out.

I guess I wanted to work two jobs at once since I do need to pay for a private college tuition, but I really don't think it's working. So I started working there and I have worked once a week or maybe twice if I'm lucky for two hours a day. Well today I was asked to work for this one kid who wanted to go out of town. Well the boss man just happened to be working today, and well I have literally had no formal training working two hours a day once or twice a week. All I know how to make are ice cream treats called Blizzards, and on occasion I can guess at how to make a shake or malt.

Anyways, I was suppose to work until four and I was sent home at two and they were BUSY! When I punched out the boss man talked to me and asked, "Do you know any of the weights or ounces of the cups, etc." and I said, "No" He went on to say, "Come in one of these days and I'll teach you them (or something like that), becasue right now it's just not working and today you were more of an annoyance than a help since you don't know how to do anythign.

To be completly honest, it is because of him that I don't know what I'm doing, because of the lack of hours and lack of training. They never even showed me once how to make a cone or anything.

I've decided that I don't think it's working out, so tomorrow I'm going to inform the boss man that I wish to quit. You see, he also doesn't know I'm still working at the pizzaria, so I might say something like, "Yesterday you said you didn't think it was working out so far, and well I agree, and the pizzria has agreed to take me back and give me more hours" They are giving me more hours or whatever, so I think I'm just going to call er quits, but I guess, how do I go about this?

In the end, I'm still looking for a summer job.

That is a terrible situation, and I have been there waaaay too many times than I'd like to admit. But Hsmom gave you good advice. Just be brief and to the point with the boss. He probably doesn't need two weeks' notice anyway.

I last month I quit my job of over a year. I just told the scheduling manager on her way out that I was going to need to quit. She said to leave a note about that. She was on her way out and the one in charge was a shift leader. I left a note for her on register paper saying I would need to no longer work there, it's been fun, etc. and I would like my last day to be the weekend of (two weeks from then present date).

Bottom line, short, sweet, and don't burn bridges for whatever they might be worth.

Don't lie.

DO do this:

Go in on one of your off days and make sure you act very drunk, then, make sure the security camera is on you, then, take the "Jerry's Kids" donation jar off the counter (or equivalent), steal a customer's food order, and walk out the door.

You won't have to worry about quiting.

Right after you get fired (most likely the next day), get up, shake your bosses' hand, and say, "Can I uses you as a reference?"

It's foolproof. Trust me.

Then, say a prayer of thanksgiving that you have the financial stability to be able to quit a crappy job and not have to worry about where the rent/your next meal is going to come from. That really helps me when I get frustrated etc. at work.

I second on what HSM said, stop at that point.

I feel you Ed, I used to work in the restaurant business as a server (waiter) for 1 1/2 years (recently quit on good terms). The problem is not you, it is your superior(s) who didn't give you the proper training to do your job effectively. I've seen this happen, and it's hypocritical when a seasoned employee gets frustrated with another employee who hasn't seasoned yet, or wasn't properly trained. Applebee's has a program where associates are eligible (with the approval of their superior) to become Neighborhood Experts, in brief, you learn how to train other associates in your position. Since I was a Neighborhood Expert server, I would train others on how to serve. I bring this up to show you that I understand where you're coming from, and hopefully it'll help reinforce your decision on this matter. If I were you, I would quit, but that's not my call.

I went in and talked to the manager, not the boss man since he wasn't there. Asked her how I go about quitting, and she said I can tell him you put your two weeks notices in. She went on to tell me not to come into work tonite or saturday because it would be worthless to train me just for me to quit.
