Adorers Of The Precious Blood In Lafayette, Indiana

There was an article somewhere that the Adorers of the Precious Blood in Lafayette was suppressed this year due to lack of vocations. We lost the beautiful monastery here in Portland, Oregon in around 2000, so the order is down to maybe 4 monasteries in the US.

But the sisters did go to other monasteries, it's just that the monastery in IN is now closed. I believe I read they went to the Precious Blood Monastery in Watertown, NY and Brooklyn, NY.
That is such sad news. They are the nuns with the bright red habit, arent' they?
They have a bright red scapular. The bright red habit belongs to the Redemptoristines.

You can see a pic of the Brooklyn community on my website:

Go to the "monasteries in serious condition" page.

That is sad. Can we learn more about them somewhere? Thanks for the post.

That's a real shame. :( I will pray for them.

Are there any PM'ers about who feel a tug in that direction? We probably have enough discerners on here to save a whole monastery! ;)

:(

I am from Lafayette, born and bred ... I didn't become Catholic until long after I moved away, so it's sad to see this close without my ever even knowing about it.

Here's an article on the closing - "Monastery of the Precious Blood to close"

And here is something on their charism from the Watertown, NY site - Contemplative Sisters Adorers of The Precious Blood

Actually a couple years ago one of the sisters from either the Maine or New Hampshire monastery, was making a home visit to her mother who was dying who is from my parish. I knew right away she was a Sr Adorer of the Precious Blood by her habit. She was very kind! Her mother passed away while she was making the visit. :sign:

That's sad.

We have a community of the Sister Adorers of the Precious Blood here, as well; I visited them once, a couple years ago, and they are a lovely group of women. Their Mother Superior, as well, has a fascinating vocation story.

I doubt, though, that they will last much longer here; they have had one Novice in something like the past decade(as far as I know), and she left not too long ago. It's a shame, because they have such a beautiful charism.

I wonder if they are online -it really does seem important for new vocations. Not that the whole community needs to be, or should be online, but tha the VD responds to e-mails and such.

The sisters in Lafayette actually did have a website. I'm sure, because I've seen it several times. Then the monasteries in Brooklyn and Watertown, NY have websites. I think young women discerning contemplative life aren't particularly attracted to them simply because they don't have a lot of new vocations.

http://www.sisterspreciousblood.org/ & http://hometown.aol.com/infants1/sisintro.htm

But even if they do die out, for lack of a better word, it's not a sign or anything that young women aren't interested in contemplative religious life anymore, as we all know very well. He's just calling them to other orders now where young vocations are thriving.

I agree with you MC; I think in the history of the Church many individual communities have come and gone. We just haven't always been aware of it. Good point!

I have though about offering to design a webpage for the local Sisters of the Precious Blood(I'm in London, Ontario), but between time and logistics... I'm not sure how I would manage it.

It disturbs me here, particularly, because we really do seem to have a decided lack of orthodox religious communities(particularly for women) in Canada, and the ones that do exist, are hard to find.
