Fr. Antony Maria OSB
Hey everyone, I was just wondering if anyone knew of any college seminaries that teach in accordance with the Church (unfortunately we do need to make that point, as not all teachers teach faithfully)? I don't really know where to begin this search, and being a Junior I'm thinking a lot about colleges lately, and I don't want to pass this possibility up without exploring it. Thanks! May God bless and protect you always in all of your endeavors, especially your discernment! Your Brother in Christ, Joe
Ora et Labora
Hi Joe, I have heard good things about St. John Vianney Seminary (somewhere north of Texas... that's all I remember about the location ) Also, the Franciscan Missionaries of the Eternal Word send their seminarian brothers to Mount St. Mary's in Maryland. I don't know much about it except that they think it's a good seminary. There are quite a few good diocesan seminaries in the US right now from what I gather. I believe the Diocese of Lincoln even has a waiting list. Here in Texas, the Diocese of Tyler is really good. And I know several incredible priests who are from the Chicago diocese, as I see you're from Illinois. Hope you get some more answers! God bless! the lords sheep
I have also heard good things about Mount St. Mary's. The problem with the mount is there is really only major seminary (at least to the best of my knowledge). There's a school in Oregon that's good, and Kenrick-Glennon in St. Louis is pretty good from what I understand. The problem is, you are under obedience to your bishop if you are entering a diocesan seminary, and under your provincial or superior if you are in a community. You can at times request to go elsewhere if you have a good reason (for example, I have a friend from a Caribbean diocese who is in the seminary here even though the other seminarians from his diocese are in Trinidad. This is where some of his family is, and where he has lived for a number of years...) So, the thing for you to do is talk to your diocesan/orders' vocation director or your bishop, since you need his permission to enter the seminary anyway... SJV is 100% orthodox and LOVES the pope. The formation is top-notch. I studied with a lot of the guys at Saint Thomas and went to a number of community events at SJV, so I speak from a plethora of personal experiences. http://www.vianney.net/ The University of Saint Thomas (where SJV men study academics), on the otherhand has a large liberal contingent of non-Catholics in faculty and admnistration, SJV, however, will help you get around that. The Catholic Studies and Philosophy departments are excellent, and there is a strong core in the Theology department. The study abroad program in Rome is unbeatable and there are tons of orthodox Catholic students. They take a fourth vow of availability to the Holy Father. Go to the website and ask them to send you a free dvd, it's very inspiring. http://www.milesjesu.org/ The major seminary at Saint Paul, Saint Paul Seminary, is becoming excellent (when and if the time comes). Chiquitunga
Hey Joe, St. Joseph's College Seminary for the Archdiocese of Chicago is supposed to be pretty good. The Rector, Fr. Presta, is a very good orthodox priest. You may want to look into them. It's at a pretty liberal college campus, Loyola University, but it's its own college into itself. There is a group of solid Catholic students at Loyola that have this newsletter, Veritas - pretty neat. (their goal I believe is to make Loyola a Catholic university again) Yes, the Archdiocese of Chicago has some incredible priests and St. Joe's and Mundelein are getting much better by leaps and bounds under Cardinal George. I know of a few seminarians at Mundelein now that are very traditional.
Fr. Antony Maria OSB
Wow, I didn't think I'd have this many replies! Thank you all very much! But from what you've told me, I guess I need the permission of a superior before I go to one. I've recently been thinking about the Benedictine Abbey that runs my high-school as a possible place that God is calling me to, so I guess I'll be talking to me sd about this (luckily, he also graduated from my hs, and is the last monk at the Abbey to have done so and then joined the Abbey next door). Please pray for my discernment! Thank you very much! But the one thing I am confused about is that I thought that college seminaries were places for further discernment where, if it seemed that God was calling you to the priesthood, that it would prepare you for major seminary. If you don't know exactly where God is calling you, but you feel as though He is calling you to the priesthood, then what would you do? May God bless and protect you always in all of your endeavors, especially your discernment! Your Brother in Christ, Joe

PedroX
Joe, I am a seminarian in 2nd theology (graduate level). In my years in seminary I have learned a few things that might help. 1) Trust your bishop and your Vocations Director. God has put them in charge of you and He will not abandon you. 2) Seminary is a great place for discernment. However, you must make the commitment and affliate with a diocese before going. I don't know of any college seminary that will take a guy who is not affliated with a diocese or religious order. 3) The seminary system in the US is good, and getting better all the time. Trust God. peace...
the_rev
I'm entering the colelge seminary this fall, and Fr. Baer the rector of SJV says that in order to discern a priestly vocation we must then live in a seminary, he also stated that about 50 percent of those who attend SJV go on to holy orders and the others leave better people, better men. However ince numbers are increasing at SJV I think that figure will probably get higher since numbers were real low before.

AccountDeleted
It would be nice if more men attended the seminary - even if they don't end up as priests, they will be better men, husbands and fathers. Go for it!

Didymus
as much as I respect everyone else's picks, I'm gonna have to say that St. Gregory the Great Seminary is the best minor seminary you can find. They are as orthodox and true to Rome as you can get. btw, the waiting list consists more or less of the dioceses that are waiting till the seminary's national accredidation. as I understood it, it's not so much them being turned down for the time being as they are waiting till St. Gregs is accredited.
