cathoholic_anonymous
Not you Lounge Daddy, unless you're StThomasMore. I'm talking about Thomas More, who says burn protestant bibles.
FullTruth, do you know why it used to be customary to burn Protestant Bibles? Not as an insult to Protestants, not as a way of expressing disgust over the translation, but out of respect. Recently I accidentally put my Carmelite scapular through the washing machine. It was only flimsy and came out too raggedy to use any more. So I followed Catholic custom and buried it. If I had access to an open fire, I would have burned it. This is the respectful way to dispose of sacred objects that can't be used any more, such as worn-out scapulars, broken rosaries, and...mutilated Bibles. Catholics consider Protestant Bibles to be mutilated because Luther removed seven books from the canon. Those Bibles are no longer perfect, no longer whole. They are broken books. I wouldn't burn a Protestant Bible if one were given to me (it's a bit impractical, not to mention bad for the environment) but I would never use it.
If Roman Catholics want people to convert, don't send someone like St.ThomasMore out. He goes against the Pauline way of evangelism to become as one of the people you want to witness to.
St Thomas More is apparently twelve years old. He has a lot of time to grow. Budge
Burn Bibles with KNOWN errors? You mean those translated from the Textus Receptus right that they wanted suppressed? Actually all this book burning doesnt bode well for your churches history regarding religious freedom. They were burned to make sure no-one ever read them again And, BTW, I'm thirteen, almost fourteen: not twelve.
cathoholic_anonymous
And, BTW, I'm thirteen, almost fourteen: not twelve.
Then you have a little less time to mature than I thought.
Would any of you here burn a Koran?
The Qu'ran is not the direct Word of God, so I don't consider it to be holy in the same way that a Bible is holy. Therefore, no. If I had a Qur'an that I did not want I would just send it to the recycling the way I do with all my unwanted books. If it were a Protestant Bible, I would at least try and dispose of it in the way I dispose of all sacramentals and blessed objects that aren't fit for use.
Actually all this book burning doesnt bode well for your churches history regarding religious freedom.
Actually, the mediaeval monasteries were the universities of their day. A treasury of learning was held in the libraries. The English monasteries were gutted by Henry VIII and many of those precious books were lost.
