How Does One Become A Knight?

There is a guy at our parish getting knighte by the Queen of England. How does one go about getting that?

I thought you had to be a citizen of the UK, I didn't know members of the commonwealth were eligible.

Knighthoods are awarded (supposedly) by the monarch, although (in the UK at least) they - and other honours - are usually granted by decision of the government. The reasons vary wildly, but it's usually something like "for services to the community/sport/gardening/education/juggling". Often nominations are submitted from local communities.

Elizabeth II is, as noted, Queen of Canada (as Canada is a self-governing dominion), and as such a Canadian citizen would be eligible for a Canadian honour. A citizen of a country where Elizabeth II is not monarch could be granted an [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_honours_system#Honorary_awards"][i]honourary[/i][/url] (UK) knighthood. An example is the U2 member [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bono#Praise_and_criticism"]Bono[/url], who is an honourary KBE.

My response is more along the lines of how NOT to be a Knight. You start volunteering and serving and *WHAMO* ya got 4 of them trying to recruit ya! (not a bad thing btw)

That probably used to work , but now it would probably be denied because of it's an "endangered species" and it would probably be given to an endangered species or a rare bird like Elton John
