Bruce S
Mass is for worship... not entertainment. It needs to be reverent. God is NOT boooooooring. He loves action, that is WHY He REQUESTED music when HIS Temple was dedicated, drums, lyres, and cymbals were the order of the day. One of these days you will be into Pentecostal style worship, and some future Pope will be play'n the strings singing too. Didn't you guys see that Whoopie Goldberg movie? Aloysius
but the Mass is ancient... it's more powerful when we realize the anceince of it... and puttin contemporary music in it doesn't remind us of that... we DO like contemporary music OUTSIDE of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass... it can be quite moving and entertaining... but the thing about the Mass is, if you're just bein moved by the music it's really just an emotional high, whereas if there was none of that stuff... it can get a lot more spiritual...
IcePrincessKRS
You're right Bruce, God is NOT boring. Neither is Mass. Even the most beautiful reverent Mass is a far FAR cry from boring. Some parishes have "folk" Mass, or a Spanish Mass with guitars or even drums. We have plenty of "music action." There's no need to make it an entertainment event. Thats ridiculous. If someone insinuated that there should be music for entertainment's sake thats ridiculous, too. And I loathe that Whoopie Goldberg movie. I think ridiculous will be my word of the day. I think that movie is ridiculous. If I want to chill and sing and have fun with nuns I'll go to Alabama and hang with one of my bestest friends, who just happens to be a NUN. :P
FX2
ok "youth masses" are cool, where they play more contemporary and upbeat sonts. Hip hop mass is takin it a little too far. I mean, hip hop cant be sung along with really either.
Dave
I bet all the out-of-place music styles at Mass these days have contributed in no small way to the loss of faith in the Real Presence and people leaving the Church. I mean, if the music doesn't help convey a sense of the sacred, then people will surely lose their faith. Edited January 28, 2004 by Dave
CatholicAndFanatical
Bring on the Gregorian Chant! WERD! Kilroy the Ninja
Well..... according to the Klingon translater I found Here Hallelujah (or Praise you Lord) roughly translates into: naD SoH joH in Klingon. Don't believe me? Take a look at mrklingon.org. And for the Catholic version of the Ten Commandments go HERE. For the record, yes, I am a geek. :abduction: :cyclone: Edited January 30, 2004 by Kilroy the Ninja

Nicole
I'm struggling with this at my own Church and am starting to go to the Abbey nearby. I don't want fluff in the liturgy. Whatever happened to just "mass"? I think the simplicity of the service along with the depth of the ritual and the words is beautiful. Why do we need to make it better? I think people need to try to understand the Mass before they lift a finger to try and improve it.
