Hip Hop Mass?

I was recently talking to a local Catholic hip-hop cat about something. He read in the North Texas Catholic newspaper that there were going to be specialty masses held somewhere, like a polka mass, for example.

He presented the idea of having a hip-hop mass, and thought that phatmass (being the Catholic hip-hop mecca), would be a great place to get something like this started.

I didn't like the idea. I told him that I'd work with him in any way that I could to get Catholic hip-hop into youth group meetings, youth rallies, after-mass activities, etc, but clarified to him that I believe the mass should remain holy, and sacred--and reverence was the key ingredient in making that happen. I told him I probably wouldn't attend a "polka" mass, due to the fact that in my opinion, it takes the focus off of the reason we go to mass--to participate in Christ's Holy Sacrifice at the altar.

I guess he wasn't expecting this answer, and we talked for quite awhile. I did say that at one time I thought it would be kinda cool to have a turntable in the choir, but then told him that my love for the mass has grown so much since then--and I truly can say that I love it now for exactly what it is, and any "gimmicks" would only distract me.

We both agreed that if it ever happened, a lot of care would have to go into how it was presented. But, I still didn't like the idea.

What do y'all think? Would a "hip-hop mass" be cool with y'all? What do y'all think of the "polka mass"?

What do y'all think of the "polka mass"?

Even though I'm of Polish descent and live in Chicago (which has the largest Polish population cluster outside of Warsaw, Poland, and which has numerous parishes with Polish language masses), I've never been to a polka mass, so I couldn't comment.

So, Chicago is the 2nd most Polish city, outside of Poland?

I don't think either are a great idea.

However, I think a turntable would be cool in the choir. Beauty in music is subjective.

In New Orleans every year during the annual French Quarter Festival, our archbishop celebrates a Jazz Mass at the Cathedral. There is another one also near Mardi Gras. I look forward to them every year and I think they are really beautiful and moving. I think the polka mass might be just as fine.

There are two Gospel Masses, the Mass of St. Martin de Porres and the Mass of St. Augustine that have been specially approved for African American parishes, but since hip-hop isn't totally an ethnic-cultural thing represented by a particular ethnic minority I don't think a lot of bishops or priests will be to psyched about something like that.

I don't go to mass to be entertained. Altough I love hip-hop and other secular genre's I don't think they would be anything other than distraction at mass. It seems to me that the need to be entertained at all times is epidemic. I hear all the time about how boring mass is from the kids in our youth groups and how Grace Fellowship has a rock climbing wall and Church-on-the-Move has rock-n-roll worship ( there's even a band called "Rock-n-Roll Worship Circus"). What has that to do with God? Father Groeschel says that if you can't sit in quiet with our Lord you need to get to confession. Don't get me wrong a praise rave or a christian-rock concert is an amesome way to get together with other christians and praise God, but mass should be solemn and reverent.

all love, peace and unity in Christ Jesus

Neither hip-hop or polka are apporpriate music for the Mass. I have my reservations about jazz too.....but it certainly is a far cry from hip-hop or polka...

Bring on the Gregorian Chant!

I totally agree!

I was watching my extended version of the LOTR's the other day.....and one of the main music providers was a little boys choir! Little boys who sounded beautiful! I mean it just made me think of heaven! Things like that and the Gregorian Chant, to me, helps us to focus in the Mass, meditate on it, makes us "hear" heaven in a way. That's just me though.

Yeah. Bring that instead of hip hop mass. I mean, sure this is called "Phat Mass", but c'mon... :rap:

yeah, whatever happened to Gregorian Chant getting pride of place or whatever for music for Mass? that's what Vatican II called for... i guess that was against the "spirit of Vatican II" though <_<

but hip hop AFTER Mass.. YAY!!

just don't mess with my Mass, yo.

Mass is for worship... not entertainment. It needs to be reverent.

God is present, and we need to act like it.
