Interesting articles.

So let me get this straight, only a few thousand men in the world have the power to cast out demons? (bishops--read part in bold, they have to pass on the power)

I believe any saved Christian with the HOly Spirit indwelling can rebuke evil spirits in Jesus's name. We do not need bishops and priests to protect us we have Jesus.

IN TIME OF PRIEST SHORTAGE AND DEMONISM, QUESTIONS RAISED ON LAY ROLE IN EXORCISM

By Michael H. Brown

It comes at an interesting time, the question: can laymen cast out demons?

It's an interesting time because if we could see with spiritual eyes we would observe evil spirits filling the landscape.

It was what was seen by mystics like Anna Catherine Emmerich -- who was beatified Sunday. It was what visionaries like St. Padre Pio also witnessed. The Pope himself, before becoming Pope, saw the present time as that of an apocalyptic confrontation.

And so when the issue of laymen casting out demons comes up it bears relevance.

Debate was sparked recently when, at a major conference of priests and exorcists in Mexico -- the first national one -- a key participant, Father Mendoza Pantoja, who coordinates eight exorcists in his archdiocese (and helped organize the very event), noted in an interview with Zenit News Service that the role of casting out demons was in the hands of bishops because when Christ granted that power, it was to His apostles -- not to everyone.
A bishop can then designate a priest to perform exorcisms.
"Priests help with prayer of liberation and the laity with prayer of intercession," said Father Pantoja. "A priest who is not an official exorcist can carry out a minor exorcism, also called prayer of liberation, helped in turn by all the laity who support him in discernment and with prayers of intercession. The laity cannot recite prayers of liberation."

A key word here: "liberation." That sounds like the actual freeing of a person from a demonic influence. In charismatic circles, it is known as "deliverance." Many are the lay people who cast out evil in the Name of Jesus.

Father Pantoja properly cites Mark 3:15, when Jesus was speaking specifically to His apostles -- forerunners of our bishops. But in that same book of the Bible, at Mark 16:17, Christ seemed to be speaking to everyone when He said:

"These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My Name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues; they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover."

That seems to open the door to more direct lay involvement -- although not with high-level cases of exorcism; laymen cannot not lead deliverance in such a case.

It is important to get the issue straight because we are not only in a time of great demonic infiltration, but also a time when many dioceses do not assign priests to perform exorcisms. As demons seem to have multiplied, there is a dire shortage of priests.

"Everything in the quote is correct [from Father Pantoja] except the last sentence," noted an American expert, Father John Hampsch of California, to a recent inquirer. "The laity can recite prayers of deliverance (liberation), as we do in the Our Father: 'Deliver us from the evil one' (proper translation). What is forbidden to the laity (and also to any priest not assigned by the bishop to act as exorcist) is to recite the official prayers of exorcism for cases of demonic possession. In less serious cases, like those of obsession, oppression, only deliverance, or 'minor exorcism,' it is permitted by both priest and laity, based on Mark 16:17. The bottom line is anyone can pray a healing prayer of deliverance for themselves others -- and the Lord's Prayer in its closing sentence is precisely one way of doing that."

A similar opinion is held by the world's most well-known exorcist, Father Gabriel Amorth of Rome, who has pointed out that St. Catherine of Siena -- who was certainly not a priest -- herself performed deliverance. "Unfortunately today it is difficult to find an exorcist," wrote Father Amorth. "Therefore, it is useful to know that, in the majority of circumstances, their ministry is not required."

That is, most problems with evil are not cases of full-fledged possession -- which must be brought immediately to the attention of the local bishop. Such severe infestations can be very dangerous to unprepared intercessors, especially if there has not been adequate discernment, strict fasting, and extensive prayer. Moreover, the priest has consecrated hands to lay on the possessed and also carries the power of his stole -- which is highly powerful in countering the enemy and unavailable to laymen.

{SO HIS CLOTHING, is POWERFUL TOO? ugh}

Laying hands on someone who appears afflicted can be hazardous without extensive preparation. Priests should be consulted and any actions preceded by Confession unless a priest is not available.

But it is a time in which we must all pray for deliverance.

The best way?

At the conference, Cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera of Mexico City called on participants to “make Christ your center, Who through His passion, death and resurrection, through the cross, triumphed over Satan, and offers Himself to us through bread and wine in the Eucharist, so that united to Him we might participate in His victory, together with Mary, star of the Evangelization, principal cooperator with Christ in the work of redemption and in crushing the head of the serpent and his seed.”

A Simple Exorcism
for Priests or Laity

Prayer Against Satan and the Rebellious Angels
Published by Order of His Holiness Pope Leo XIII

The following is a simple exorcism prayer that can be said by priests or laity. The term “exorcism” does NOT always denote a solemn exorcism involving a person possessed by the devil. In general, the term denotes prayers to “curb the power of the devil and prevent him from doing harm.” As St. Peter had written in Holy Scripture, “your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, goeth about seeking whom he may devour.” (1 St. Peter 5,8)

The Holy Father exhorts priests to say this prayer as often as possible, as a simple exorcism to curb the power of the devil and prevent him from doing harm. The faithful also may say it in their own name, for the same purpose, as any approved prayer. Its use is recommended whenever action of the devil is suspected, causing malice in men, violent temptations and even storms and various calamities. It could be used as a solemn exorcism (an official and public ceremony, in Latin), to expel the devil. It would then be said by a priest, in the name of the Church and only with a Bishop's permission.

Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

Most glorious Prince of the Heavenly Armies, Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in “our battle against principalities and powers, against the rulers of this world of darkness, against the spirits of wickedness in the high places” (Eph., 6,12). Come to the assistance of men whom God has created to His likeness and whom He has redeemed at a great price from the tyranny of the devil. Holy Church venerates thee as her guardian and protector; to thee, the Lord has entrusted the souls of the redeemed to be led into heaven. Pray therefore the God of Peace to crush Satan beneath our feet, that he may no longer retain men captive and do injury to the Church. Offer our prayers to the Most High, that without delay they may draw His mercy down upon us; take hold of “the dragon, the old serpent, which is the devil and Satan”, bind him and cast him into the bottomless pit ... “that he may no longer seduce the nations” (Apoc. 20, 2-3).

Exorcism

In the Name of Jesus Christ, our God and Lord, strengthened by the intercession of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, Mother of God, of Blessed Michael the Archangel, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul and all the Saints. (and powerful in the holy authority of our ministry)*, we confidently undertake to repulse the attacks and deceits of the devil.

* Lay people omit the parenthesis above.

Psalm 67

God arises; His enemies are scattered and those who hate Him flee before Him. As smoke is driven away, so are they driven; as wax melts before the fire, so the wicked perish at the presence of God.

V. Behold the Cross of the Lord, flee bands of enemies.

R. The Lion of the tribe of Juda, the offspring of David, hath conquered.

V. May Thy mercy, Lord, descend upon us.

R. As great as our hope in Thee.

(The crosses below indicate a blessing to be given if a priest recites the Exorcism; if a lay person recites it, they indicate the Sign of the Cross to be made silently by that person.)

We drive you from us, whoever you may be, unclean spirits, all satanic powers, all infernal invaders, all wicked legions, assemblies and sects. In the Name and by the power of Our Lord Jesus Christ, + may you be snatched away and driven from the Church of God and from the souls made to the image and likeness of God and redeemed by the Precious Blood of the Divine Lamb. +

Most cunning serpent, you shall no more dare to deceive the human race, persecute the Church, torment God's elect and sift them as wheat. + The Most High God commands you, + He with whom, in your great insolence, you still claim to be equal. “God who wants all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (I Tim. 2,4). God the Father commands you. + God the Son commands you. + God the Holy Ghost commands you. + Christ, God's Word made flesh, commands you; + He who to save our race outdone through your envy, “humbled Himself, becoming obedient even unto death” (Phil.2,8); He who has built His Church on the firm rock and declared that the gates of hell shall not prevail against Her, because He will dwell with Her “all days even to the end of the world” (Matt. 28,20). The sacred Sign of the Cross commands you, + as does also the power of the mysteries of the Christian Faith. + The glorious Mother of God, the Virgin Mary, commands you; + she who by her humility and from the first moment of her Immaculate Conception crushed your proud head. The faith of the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and of the other Apostles commands you. + The blood of the Martyrs and the pious intercession of all the Saints command you. +

Thus, cursed dragon, and you, diabolical legions, we adjure you by the living God, + by the true God, + by the holy God, + by the God “who so loved the world that He gave up His only Son, that every soul believing in Him might not perish but have life everlasting” (St.John 3, 16); stop deceiving human creatures and pouring out to them the poison of eternal damnation; stop harming the Church and hindering her liberty. Begone, Satan, inventor and master of all deceit, enemy of man's salvation. Give place to Christ in Whom you have found none of your works; give place to the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church acquired by Christ at the price of His Blood. Stoop beneath the all-powerful Hand of God; tremble and flee when we invoke the Holy and terrible Name of Jesus, this Name which causes hell to tremble, this Name to which the Virtues, Powers and Dominations of heaven are humbly submissive, this Name which the Cherubim and Seraphim praise unceasingly repeating: Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord, the God of Hosts.

V. O Lord, hear my prayer.

R. And let my cry come unto Thee.

V. May the Lord be with thee.

R. And with thy spirit.

Let us pray.

God of heaven, God of earth, God of Angels, God of Archangels, God of Patriarchs, God of Prophets, God of Apostles, God of Martyrs, God of Confessors, God of Virgins, God who has power to give life after death and rest after work: because there is no other God than Thee and there can be no other, for Thou art the Creator of all things, visible and invisible, of Whose reign there shall be no end, we humbly prostrate ourselves before Thy glorious Majesty and we beseech Thee to deliver us by Thy power from all the tyranny of the infernal spirits, from their snares, their lies and their furious wickedness. Deign, O Lord, to grant us Thy powerful protection and to keep us safe and sound. We beseech Thee through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.

V. From the snares of the devil,
R. Deliver us, O Lord.

V. That Thy Church may serve Thee in peace and liberty:
R. We beseech Thee to hear us.

V. That Thou may crush down all enemies of Thy Church:
R. We beseech Thee to hear us.

(Holy water is sprinkled in the place where we may be.)

Leave Exorcism to the Experts, Warns Church

Oct 14 3:03 AM US/Eastern

A far cry from sorcerers, satanists and other practitioners whom he dismisses as "charlatans," Italian exorcist Andrea Gemma fights the devil only with the strength of his prayers and advises Catholics: 'Don't do this at home".

A rotund, expansive Neapolitan, the 74-year-old bishop was the first lecturer to face the Catholic Church's latest crop of budding exorcists at a unique course run by clergy at Rome's Pontifical Regina Apostolorum University. The course began Thursday and will run for several weeks.

Faced with a classroom of 50 priests intent on learning how best to take on the devil, the veteran Gemma profiles his ideal comrade at arms, spiritually-speaking: "Live a holy life, work hard and be devoted to the Madonna".

The students at this second course -- the first course of its kind drew more than 100 priests last year -- include lay Catholics.

"If you reject God you leave a place for his enemy. Neutrality is not an option," the priest who heads the course, Father Gabriele Nanni of the ultra-conservative congregation Legionaires of Christ, tells them.

"And in our societies given over to neo-paganism, agnosticism, to a revolt against God, it was inevitable that the demon would find more space to act," he said.

Father Gemma is also convinced. In his small southern Italian diocese of Isernia, which has a population of 60,000 souls, he has nominated four exorcist priests -- well above the Italian average, where priests authorised to carry out exorcisms number in the several hundreds.

But he criticised the Italian bishops' council for being insufficiently committed to hunting down demons, though he said he was encouraged by Pope Benedict XVI's recent public support for priests tasked with such missions.

The pope had a brief exchange with a few of the priests attending a congress of Italian exorcists after one of his weekly general audiences last month, telling them to "continue your important mission in the service of the Church."

The prelate, whose titanic struggles against the devil fills several of his books, recognizes that not all the cases referred to him require exorcism.

Some are "poor people who need someone to listen to them," he said. "But those priests who send them away without listening to them patiently are not fit for the priesthood."

When someone is really possessed by the devil, he said, "freeing them of it can take months, if not years."

But the bishop is certain of one thing: "The devil is not the God of evil, God is stronger."

Asked about his method of discerning real cases of possession from other psychological illnesses, the priest revealed his "secret weapon":

"If I speak Latin, the demon responds to me in Latin. He has a horror of that language."
So the devil is afraid of Latin?

All the witches that do their spells in Latin should hear that one...

There is a difference between rebuking an evil spirit (which, you are quite correct, any believer can do, according to your scruptures), and casting out demons.

Budge you treat us horribly...You say you have Jesus. You dont know any of us personally if you did it would be a different story and you would even recognize Jesus in us. Instead you beat us down and just keep on beating. I believe in Jesus, I recieve him every sunday I worship and glorify him in my body. I confess my sins unto God and I am forgiven, every time I sin. I express sorrow for my sins and I walk out of confession floating. As a free man. Healed. Love and joy that I can't really explain with words.

This is how a whole lot of us here are. This is our faith and our home. You think we hate Jesus and the bible. That is so very far from the truth. I battled demons as a kid before i was even baptised. I seen them, I heard them and I was tormented by them they would walk around me while i was sleeping, they would wake me up. Since I joined the Church I have witnessed the power of satan and his demons dissapear in my life. I havent been bugged by any demons since those times as a Child, since before my Baptism and confirmation. No one is catholic in my family, they are all protestants and mormons. I am truly happy and I try live the christian life as best as I can. Many others here are too.

I dont treat you horribly, I tell you the truth, and many of you are offended, which by the way is biblical--the gospel would be of offense to some.

Im sure some of you are quite nice people in life, but I tell the nice unbelievers too, that I know that they need Jesus Christ as well and to be saved. If you were Mormon I would be telling you the same things.

I dont call you names, all you are doing is using Catholic apologist technique #3, where if a Christian preaches the truth and questions the doctrines of the Catholic Church, you autoimatically claim "hate"

Gal 4:16 Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?

Just because we dont believe in your personal interpretations, it doesnt mean we are unbelievers. The gospel does not offend us. Trust me.

just in "another gospel"
