Hi all,

My hubby is trying to talk me into Atkins, have any of you tried it? What did you think?

Thanks! Birgitta

I did it for 3 months and lost a little over 20 pounds. I'd like to lose more, but I ended up really missing my carbs and went off of Atkins. Now I'm just sticking to exercising and eating smaller, healthier portions. But it does work, as long as you have the willpower to stay away from carbs.

Atkins allows for too much fat and not enough carbs.

Check out the South Beach Diet... it's similar and better for you.

Basically think of it this way...

A gram of Protien has 3 calories

A gram of Carbs have 3 calories

A gram of Fat has 9 calories

Protien is not stored as fat, if you don't use it, it gets passed out of the body.

Carbs are you main energy (2 types of carbs), if you don't use the carbs you eat, it gets stored as fat. 2 types of carbs are complex and simple... complex carbs are things like pasta, veggies, rice, etc (slow burn)... simple carbs are your fruits and sugars (quick burn)

Fat can get stored and is burned, not a clean energy sort of say.

The most important thing to remember is that you need to eat for the activity of your day. If you are working out or doing a lot of physcial activity, then eat more, if you're just hanging out not doing much, eat like a rabbit.

Drink a lot of water, try to workout at least 30 mins... even if it's just doing floor exercises or stretching.

If you need any help coming up with a routine, let me know... I know a little about working out.

Good Luck & God Bless!

If I understand the Atkins diet… increasing intake of red meat and general animal byproducts and avoiding veggies and grains (fiber) …

I do not wish to die of colon cancer, but thanx for the opportunity.

Limiting carbs can be healthy, but not to the extreme of what Atkins says. I HIGHLY recommend the Gestational Diabetes diet.

It limits carbs, allows for lots of fruits and veggies, and protien. If you limit the calories (unlike pregnant or nursing women) it should help you lose weight.

Just remember that carbs = sugar. Limiting the amount of carbs that you take in to certain grams and at certain times of day allows your body to process them.

I've been on South Beach since the first of the year. I've lost ten pounds so far. The biggest problem I have with Atkins, is what to eat on fridays during lent. I'm not really fond of fish, so those days of abstinence usually end up being days of vegetarianism for me. ;)

Aktins works well if you can stick to it. I lost 20 pounds on it. However it is expensive, unless you stick to eating chicken. You feel so energetic on it, because you are avoiding the sugar highs and lows.

My downfall is always :pepsi: (breakfast, lunch and dinner).

Another thing I have noticed is my concentration. I was diagnosed with ADHD last year. I took the medication (stratera I think) for a while and it improved, but the medication had side effects for me that out weighed the benefits. Since I have cut my carb intake (or possibly wheat intake), I have seen a the same improvements on my concentration and memory I had with the medication. Weird huh?

Have you tried Dite Rite? I wouldn't have made it this far without my Diet Rite. I like to mix the plain cola and the strawberry-kiwi together. It's amesome.

I lost 24 lbs doing Atkins since Jan 5.

I'm gradually getting off of it now, and am looking into the South Beach Diet, because I really love bread and pasta too much. When I was doing Atkins I didn't cheat at all. No caffiene was probably the hardest part for me.

Some good drinks to get for the Atkins diet are Diet Rite, Hansen's Diet Soda, and Diet Ice Botanicals. The last two can be found at Costco Wholesale stores and the Diet Ice Botanicals are sold in 7-11's too. I really love 'em because they are no calories, no carbs, no caffiene, and are made with Splenda, and taste really good. No Diet aftertaste at all.

I still have to lose 20 more lbs to get down to my goal weight, so if the rumors are true about getting fat again once you get off Atkins, I'm in trouble.

You have to be very careful about what you eat forever Dust and permanently limit those carbs.

Just make your carb intake all tacos, so very tasty and good for you,, so you don't feel deprived.

I can't drink the diet drinks, they give me a headache. I know if I could have drank them I would have lost more weight.

It's probably the aspartame (same thing as Equal) that gives you the headaches. Since Diet Rite and the others that dUSt mentioned use sucralose (same thing as Splenda - as a matter of fact, Diet Rite uses Splenda brand sucralose), they might not give you the headaches.

That's only the case if you go back to taking in very large amounts of carbs, as most Americans usually do. If you eat even half of the carbs you did before you went on Atkins, you should be fine, so long as you exercise as well. Also, drink lots of water...at least 8 glasses a day. The more the better.

I've been off of Atkins for awhile and haven't gained a pound back. I love water and drink 10 glasses a day. Sometimes, I crave something different, so a great low-carb drink is Crystal Lite. I don't like the iced tea, but the lemonade is great! They have a zillion flavors too.

Good luck to everyone of us that needs to shed a few pounds. :D
