EcceNovaFacioOmni
I don't like it. What these men are doing is disgusting and I doubt anyone disagrees, but should we make an embarrassing spectical of it on TV? I feel the same about courtroom TV shows or anything similar. Don't people just watch to laugh, judge, or hate the people on the screen? Maybe Dateline's show is a deterrent, I don't know... I don't get it. Am I off the mark on this? Edit: Just a note, I used to think this stuff was funny so my position comes from a changed viewpoint. Edited April 2, 2007 by thedude
Josie07
no.. i don't think so.. It's probablly isn't right that they make entertainment out of embrassing situations..., But I must say that the dateline is helpful in some ways... catching a predator and all the junk.. They should be subjected to embrassement.. And as far as the courtroom thing.. They know when they go on that show that they are going to be embrassed.. They get payed for that... ~Josie
homeschoolmom
First off, it's not a deterrent. Many times Chris Hanson asks the dudes if they've seen the Dateline shows and they have... they obviously are not dissuaded from their actions. Now maybe other people are deterred... Hard to say, since they wouldn't get caught, but I'm guessing not many. It can't actually claim to be for educational purposes either... I mean, the same message to parents week after week... Don't let your kids go online in their rooms, know what your kids are doing, etc. It's a good message, but after awhile, you can't really claim to be educating the public. I think it's main purpose is a little titillation, and a lot entertainment. People love to watch a rabbi, a teacher, a police officer go down publicly. Should those people be prosecuted to the full extent of the law? Yes, yes, yes. The thing is, they are cheap to produce and draw a big audience. And NBC, Dateline and Chris Hanson all feel good about doing something for the public...
Mercy me
While I have never liked them, I thought that they had value if only to show that these people aweful people are out there and to monitor you kids. But they have really taken it too far. Is it really necessary to have it on twice a month? We get the picture already. I don't see that they have any possitive effect now. Anomaly
It's just a perverted way to garner an audience so they can sell airtime for car commercials and Britta water filters. If it was really about catching these perverts, it wouldn't have the 'interview' period before they're arrested. In all the 'interviews' the perv's deny the intention of having sex, it's the e-mails that nail them, so it is all a sick 'Jerry Springer' show cloaked in self-righteousness but motivated by profit alone. cmotherofpirl
I think its a great show in that it shows a sexual predator is an ORDINARY LOOKING person, and looks like everybody else. They hold jobs, they are married, they have kids. It dispells every notion many people have: thats its only priests out there molesting children. These guys are acting out a fantasy, and I think its a whole lot deeper and far more common than most of us like to think. And if this show gets it across on even a weekly basis its doing a good thing.
Totus Tuus
I don't have TV, but it sounds to me like the "moral" of this show could be transmitted to the public without the crude entertainment aspect. I.E., a series on statistics of these crimes, how to best prevent them, etc. Like I said, though, I don't have T.V. so I might not be understanding the gist of this show. Paladin
I found the first couple interesting, but they're beginning to be as common and cheap as "World's Deadliest Police Chases" and the like. At some point, it begins to dilute the threat of sexual predators. And it's always seemed borderline entrapment to me.
Aloysius
I think the interviews should vary more... I think they've established that they all deny it and say they've never done it before. I can't think of any good questions... but with all the resources available to NBC I'm sure they could come up with something a little more probing into their mindset. It seems to be a major complusion, reminds me of alcoholism in a way, like the saying goes: the man takes a drink, and eventually the drink takes the man. Maybe because they have been so primed with the easy availability of pornography, they feel compelled to take it to the next level.
