Maybe some people really experience it, but I think 98% of it is their mind playing a trick on their body because they want to experience it so bad...or they are just faking for attention.
They just want to believe it happened sooooo bad that they trick themselves into thinking that it acctually did.

I just have a hard time believe that sort of thing. :idontknow:

I've seen some people who were dead set against the idea, thought it was fake, etc. have it happen to them. I'd say the majority of the time it's not fake. I do believe that there are times when the person wants it to happen, but when he forces it, he really doesn't get anything out of it. It's like they're beginning to idolize the experience. That's usually when their prayer life starts to dry up, to keep them focused on the God of miracles rather than the miracles of God.

Also, doesn't Teresa of Avila speak of something similar? I do not have my book here, but I think it is in the Interior Castle and it is a kind if mystical absorption in God; I remember while reading it that it sounded a lot like being slain in the spirit. I might be recalling it incorrectly.

At any rate... always in community or not?[/quote]

I have heard of it happening in other circumstances. I do think that it happens more often in prayer meetings where they're prepared for that sort of thing b/c people have an easier time letting go. I would tend to think that solitary examples of it often go less reported anyway. You tend to lose your sense of time, etc. when it happens.

it happens and is real.

now, if it happens ALL the time--we may be talking of something different in that case. i've seen someone who did that several times unwarranted--falling before hands were to prayed over her, dancing sporadicly and falling during praise and worship sessions---totally unaware of having danced. THAT is not normal "slain in the spirit" behavior and is of very questionable origin.
