Could Being "slain In The Spirit"

We were discussing this recently. Could this phenomenon be some sort of undiagnosed narcolepsy??

It just seems to me that if the Lord was going to let someone rest in Him, it would happen all the time after receiving the Eucharist.

What do you think?

I am very skeptical, too... although I know people who "rest in the Spirit" who are very sincere Catholics. It doesn't make any sense to me, but it could be that I just don't understand.

A bunch of charismatics you guys are huh? ;) I've found that after 3 years at Franciscan University there are just bigger fish to fry than trying to go after God fearing orthodox Catholics. You are probably right that it very much is peer pressure and the power of suggestion, but ultimately charismatics, at least those at FUS, are very holy people in the lives that they live.

But I am a big skeptic of everything.
Yes, yes you are.

That's always been my thought.

I always assumed 99% of them were. :)

Having been rested in the Spirit once (prior to anyone telling me what it was), I can attest to the fact that it is NOT fake.

I was in adoration once, deeply praying, sending God pretty much as much praise as I could muster when, all of a sudden, I began to shake. It was a slight tremor at first, and then it became more pronounced. I didn't know what was going on, so I decided to change my posture. I prostrated myself and continued praying. Then, all of a sudden, this feeling of peace came over me. I felt as if my mother was wrapping me in her arms, hugging me firmly. Simultaneously, this slight weight begun to form on my back, like I was being hugged from behind. I felt so loved, and continued to praise God...and then I felt myself falling...like I was falling into an abyss of love...

I emerged about 20 minutes later with my 2 brothers praying over me.

I can't describe it...it was this amazing feeling of love and peace and healing.

Don't be so skeptical. God loves us.

It's not that I think it never happens. I just think that maybe people who have it happen ALL THE TIME might have some form of narclepsy? :idontknow:

Narcolepsy would express itself at other times too. Being "slain in the spirit" is a specific phenomenon associated w/ the Charismatic Renewal. It has happened to me a number of times, once in adoration but usually while being prayed over. I've seen people big and small, in good health and bad, and I cannot attribute it to narcolepsy. I've seen it happen to people who rarely sleep or have difficulty sleeping. Moreover, it is not sleeping, per se. All the times it has happened to me I have been fully conscious throughout. (However, the one in adoration was apparently a vision and I lost most contact w/ the outside world during it.)

Had you eaten that day? Sounds like you fainted. Not to trivialize your experience or anything, but usually the most mundane explanation is the correct one.

I think it's based on a feeling that if they don't receive these gifts then they won't fit into the community. I think that very nearly all instances are self-induced, such as when voodoo adherents trance out. If the desire is strong enough for something to happen, fakery is not above some people.
